Meet Manual, the 3D-Printed Book That Carries the Code Used to Print It

The text on the pages of this book, Manual, isn’t a traditional story. Look closely, and you’ll see it’s G-code, the machine language used to control 3D printers. Created by Studio Darius Ou with Benson Chong through their research initiative Hyperpress, the book contains a partial copy of the very G-code used to fabricate itself. In effect, it’s a 3D-printed book that contains the instructions for printing another 3D-printed book. They say don’t judge a book by its cover, but what about its material? Manual is a 26-page book made of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), a flexible material that isn’t easy to print at “paper-thin” book scale. Getting it right took extensive testing to balance flexibility, durability, and print quality, and the designers ran into limits on how small the text could be printed while still holding up.

Cardinal Glass Industries today announced Divert bird-friendly glass, set to launch in the fourth quarter of 2026. The solution is fully integrated into the Cardinal coated glass portfolio and eliminates the need for films, interlayers, acid etching, and UV-only coatings, say company officials. About Divert Using precision laser-etching, Divert creates first-surface patterns that are visible to birds but barely noticeable to people, according to the company, with tightly controlled dot size, spacing, and pattern geometry that comply with bird-friendly standards. Because the pattern is physically etched and not applied, Divert maintains lasting performance through manufacturing, handling, and years of exposure to the elements without peeling, fading, or delaminating.

Metallium scales up flash heating tech

Three units run in Texas ahead of metal separation and recovery tests. Pushing its Flash Joule Heating (FJH) technology from one unit at a time toward multiple units running together, Metallium Ltd. reported the successful completion of its first multi-unit FJH commissioning campaign at the company's technology development facility in Texas. Developed at Rice University and licensed by Metallium in 2024, FJH uses intense electrical pulses to rapidly heat material containing valuable metals, breaking molecular bonds and allowing those metals to be separated from the rest of the feedstock without the acids or smelting required in conventional processing. Since then, Metallium has tested FJH on electronic waste, semiconductor scrap, rare earth-bearing mineral concentrates and carbonates, and heavy rare earth-enriched ore as it works to recover critical and precious metals from complex waste and mineral materials.

Luyten’s Tower Crane 3DCP System Capable of Printing Structures Up to 100 Meters

Luyten has produced a most unusual 3DCP printer. 3DCP systems tend to be of two forms: a gantry that surrounds the build site; and a robotic arm that reaches into the build volume. Sometimes these can be mounted on rails to extend the effective build volume on the X and Y axes. Australia-based Luyten, a global construction company, has developed a very different format for a 3DCP device: a tower crane. Tower cranes are something everyone in an urban environment is familiar with: they are those extremely tall cranes that lift components upwards when constructing skyscrapers. Most large city skylines will have at least a few visible at all times. Here, however, Luyten has done something quite unique: they’ve used a tower crane as a motion system for the 3DCP process. That is their ASCEND SERIES A27 system.

Depolymerizable 3D Printer Resin Enables Repeated Recycling of3D Prints

There’s a 3D printer resin that can apparently be reused, over and over. Normal 3D printer resin is a one-way trip: once solidified, it remains solid forever. More printing requires more resin. There is no recycling path for typical resin prints, as they must be tossed into the landfill. Imagine my surprise when a reader pointed me to 3Dresyn’s “Circular RePrint Bio”, a “Depolymerisable Circular 3D resin”. Hold on, what does all that mean? They explain: “This is a 100% circular, bio-positioned 3D resin for SLA, DLP and LCD printing at 385–405 nm that prints solid parts and later depolymerises back to a reusable syrup under a controlled thermal trigger.”

There’s a jig sitting in a drawer at most aerospace and automotive shops. Making it meant calling a machinist, waiting weeks, and paying for a block of aluminum to be carved down into something used maybe 50 times before the design changed. Additive manufacturing was supposed to fix that. And it has, at small scales. But scale up beyond a desktop printer, or the moment a structural component needs to actually bear load, the old world tends to reassert itself. The printers either can’t handle the material, can’t hold the tolerances, or require a specialist to babysit every job. That gap between what industrial additive manufacturing promises and what it actually delivers on the shop floor is what large-format 3D printer manufacturer BigRep has spent the better part of a decade trying to close. The latest wave of announcements from the company suggests they’ve made real progress on multiple fronts at once.

Sandvik launches Osprey GRCop-42 copper alloy powder for space propulsion 3D printing

Sandvik, a Sweden-headquartered industrial technology group and gas-atomized metal powder producer, has launched Osprey GRCop-42, a copper-chromium-niobium alloy powder for additive manufacturing of space propulsion components. The material is intended for high-heat applications where material traceability and repeatable performance are central to qualification. Originally developed by NASA, GRCop-42 is a copper alloy for components exposed to demanding thermal and mechanical loads. Sandvik is targeting uses including fuel injector faces and combustion chamber linings, particularly for regeneratively cooled rocket engine hardware. The material combines high thermal conductivity with strength retention at elevated temperatures. Sandvik states that GRCop-42 retains strength above 500°C, making it suitable for components designed to manage high heat flux during operation.

Croom Medical brings patient-specific implant manufacturing in-house

Company claims implant turnaround cut from weeks to days, as additive manufacturing capacity expands with tantalum and lattice platforms

Croom Medical has begun producing patient-specific implants for orthopedic OEMs entirely within its own Limerick site, rather than routing the work through outside suppliers. The Irish company claimed the shift delivers a complete, inspected implant within days, compared with the weeks or months a multi-supplier chain can take. Croom reported that the implants, produced in titanium, cobalt chrome and tantalum, suit complex, low-volume devices such as ankle implants, acetabular cups, interbody cages, revision cones, post-traumatic reconstruction devices and craniomaxillofacial implants.
