LOL, sadly no, I didn’t get any of the Good Shit for my concussion (didn’t really need any, so that’s neither here nor there). But marijuana is legal for recreational use in Chicago now, so once the crowds die down and supply is a little more steady, there may be some Edibles Midnight Theatre :D

yeah, a lot of this is extremely modern and western European and possibly not accurate. If you want to take a dunk in the fae worlds but not wade in too deep I'm going to recommend George MacDonald's <i>Phantastes.</i>

Well, I don’t mind stuff being recent, precisely, I just like to know what is and what isn’t, you know? Like if I’m going to bite a living author’s style I want it to be intentional :D But I’m starting to figure it out -- the more I learn about specific terminology the easier it is to follow it back to its source.

You need to look at Tam Lin, if you haven’t already.

You know, I feel like it’s some kind of curse, but I’ve never been able to read Tam Lin. Even trying to read summaries I just GET SO BORED. And I don’t think Tam Lin is in and of itself boring! I just can’t stand it. (I actually have already written a scene in which Sly Devil is like “No, I DON’T own a copy of Tam Lin, that’s for a REASON, it’s RUBBISH” and his apprentice mimes clutching her pearls in shock.)

Be fair, Titania as a fairy queen shows up in Shakespeare and that’s 400 years old. :D

Naproxen isn't Advil, Sam, though it is related. Naprosyn = naproxen. Advil = Motrin = ibuprofen.

Dammit! I can never keep them straight. I only ever try to use the brand names because when I say “Naproxen sodium” people look at me like I just claimed to be an alchemist :D I can’t help it, we always bought the generic stuff so I don’t know any of the brand names. I guess Aleve is Naproxen, and I just never get the A names right.

A bit like! Though I want to be clear I definitely don’t mean to say that this kind of thing is a fix-it for depression or anything like that -- I want people to use medication or therapy or whatever works for them, because otherwise I do sound a bit like I’m recommending yoga. I still have depression, it’s a chemical issue, but now I have one more tool for managing it, and perhaps more importantly for managing how it impacts my relationship to the world. If your formed habit is to respond to outside stimulus with frank openness and an assumption of good will -- or even, as Clint’s player said in a reblog, with an acknowledgement of “Hey, I’m in a hot mess, it’s okay to say it” -- then it makes it easier to maintain relationships and also accept help.

And that, Sam, is the core principle of virtue ethics — modeling oneself on a good person.

I think the key for me was that it wasn’t something I was doing in a real attempt to improve, or something I felt pressure towards. It’s just...a very persistent meme, really. There’s no stakes, there’s no goal, so there’s no sense of failure or even threat of failure. And that makes it super easy to keep doing it.

Ok, this made me tear up. I try to be positive and upbeat in my school teacher role, but in my own "real life" I sometimes forget. Thanks, for the upbeat reminder, Sam! Happy New Year!

And see that’s the great thing, it doesn’t have to be YOU being upbeat. You can just make a post AS SOMEONE ELSE being upbeat and then the pressure’s off!

Ao3 is your friend. There are a few crossovers. I enjoy a series called Brothers by zathara001 and a multi-chapter fic called By Paths Coincident by honorat. One has Eliot and Jacob as brothers, the other as cousins.

Yeah, I am told that Brothers is basically an already-written version of the idea I had -- I both curse and bless fandom! *fistshake* Curse because someone already had the idea, bless because now I don’t have to write it, I can just go and enjoy theirs :D

Prompt: Rey's perspective on using the mind trick against the storm trooper.

Rey comes to two realisations, hanging there in the restraints after Kylo Ren stalks away. The first is the giddy, dizzying feeling of having taken on a nightmare (even now she recalls how he stood too close, how he reeked of fear, how the madness in his eyes was a familiar kind) and won. The second, which she turns over as she looks at the stormtrooper guarding her door, is that if she has to follow this destiny, use these powers, and take this unlikely role, she’s going to make it work for her. 

The third thing she realises, feeling her way through this strange new ability, is that it hadn’t been that difficult, in the end.

A colleague who's a criminal justice prof thinks the body cameras are definitely the way to go for all police.

It seems to drastically reduce police misbehavior. I can't imagine any way in which wearing a camera would be harmful. It would help a great deal in court testimony. 

As someone else in comments pointed out, apparently the Ferguson police have body cameras, they just...don't wear them. GEE I WONDER WHY. So I think it has to be a law, preferably a federal law, that requires all US law enforcement officers to wear a body camera while on duty, to keep it in good repair and the batteries charged -- otherwise they can buy all the cameras they want but officers who want to get up to shit are just going to "forget" to use them or let the batteries run down. 

But of course a law is also the best way to ensure that those with investments in body camera producers make bank, so hopefully that's where this will lead.
