Experience Vegas

As some of you may know, last year Pi Sigma put on a gigantic Las Vegas trip which featured a tour of the MGM Grand Las Vegas Hotel; because of this, last year's VPPA, Belyn Lai, called the event "The Grand Tour". This event was ridiculously huge and well thought out, and every single person who attended the event loved it and said it was an experience he or she would never forget.

At this time, I was a pledge of the best Iota Class for the Pi Sigma Chapter, and as I interviewed more and more of the brothers, I kept hearing more and more stories about this mystical trip from Vegas. Not one to step away from challenges, by the time I had heard about The Grand Tour for the sixth time, I vowed to myself that I would become the next VPPA and create an even larger event for pledges to hear about for years on end.

However, as we learned from my last blog post, I am always ready to take command but I am also extremely cautious; when I ran for VPPA for my term, one of the brothers asked me if I was planning on continuing The Grand Tour tradition and I gave a hesitant yes because I did not want to commit to doing it if everything fell through. But, in typical Molly Greathouse fashion, I started planning the Vegas trip the night I won the election.

Fast forward to four months later, as I arrived with some other Pi Sigma brothers at the MGM Grand Hotel and almost started crying because I was so happy that it was finally happening. In preparation for the event, I had rescheduled the MGM Grand Hotel tour, but also added in a talk about leadership from Levon James, the Ambassador Manager of MARQUEE Dayclub&Nightclub, and also free clubbing for every 21+ brother who attended the event. I had also rebranded the event to be called "Experience Vegas", sent about 20 e-mails to chapter presidents, Pi Sigma, alumni groups, and professionals in Las Vegas, booked a speaking room for Levon, planned tours, booked multiple hotel rooms, answered phone calls from chapter presidents, professionals and many alumni with questions about the event and presented multiple presentations to my own chapter about the event. And as I dragged my suitcase behind me through the opulent double doors of the MGM Grand Hotel and my big brother checked us into our hotel room, I could hardly believe it. With the endless hours I spent in front of my computer and on my phone, it was beginning.

After that, the whole weekend was a whirlwind of fun and cool events (not like I am biased or anything).

The MGM Grand Hotel tours (there was more than one because each tour could only hold around 35 people), both of which were led by Meagan Lippmann, were really interesting, and everyone learned a great deal about the hotel and working in the hospitality industry. With Lippmann's stories about crazy things that have happened at the hotel because of staff and/or guests, and with uplifting stories about how working in the hospitality industry is one of the best things ever, Lippmann got everyone interested in being a part of some sort of hospitality with her tours of the hotel.

Levon James' talk about leadership and how to effectively manage teams was also amazing! Everyone was enamored with James' swag (ammiright ladies? heh? HEH? Anyway...) and his stories from his past about being a promoter on the Strip. His question and answer section was one of the longest I have ever been a part of because people were so interested in his stories and how he was able to get where he is today. James was also the reason that all 21+ brothers were able to get into his clubs for free, and because of that, his reception was very high.

The event was two and a half days of madness, but I am extremely proud of everyone for helping me out with the event and being a part of it. I will always look back on Experience Vegas fondly, and hopefully, so will everyone else.

Deloitte Summer Programs, Presented by Sigma Psi Lambda + Delta Sigma Pi

Event Name: Deloitte Consulting Information Night: Summer Recruitment

Date: February 9th, 2012

Time: 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Number of Brothers Attending: 21 Pi Sigma Brothers

Number of Non-Brothers: 6 Pi Sigma Pledges, 5 speakers, 20 Sigma Psi Lambda (the other professional business fraternity on UC Irvine's campus), 7 members from Beta Alpha Psi (the accounting fraternity on campus) and 7 non-affiliated students

Event Summary:

The Pi Sigma Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi and Sigma Psi Lambda put on an event that hosted Deloitte Consulting's recruiting team to speak about the different summer programs Deloitte offers to students. The recruitment team included Tom Uy, the head recruiter for the Irvine office of Deloitte Consulting, as well as some recruiters from the Los Angeles office. Deloitte also brought along two recently graduated UC Irvine students who are now working in the Irvine office (one of which is an alumni of the Pi Sigma Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi).

David Sun, the Sigma Psi Lambda president, introduced Tom Uy and he began to give a quick speech about how Deloitte is the superior consulting company, and the benefits of obtaining an internship at their prestigious company. He gave quick definitions of the different programs which Deloitte holds during the summer; the Leadership Summer Program, open only to sophomores, which is like the internship program they offer but only 10 weeks and the Summer Internship Program, open only to juniors, where one would get on a project and work on that project throughout the summer. After Mr. Uy finished his short introduction, he introduced the two recruiters from Los Angeles who spoke about each program in more detail. Then, the two recently graduated students began to talk about Deloitte's culture, and why it was the best company to work for. These recent UC Irvine graduates told the group about how Deloitte respects a work-life balance and how Deloitte offers a variety of different opportunities for young professionals who wish to help companies with their internal workings. Many of the brothers of Delta Sigma Pi have been offered summer internships already, and were very interested to hear about the way that Deloitte runs their internal affairs.

After the speakers finished, they opened the floor to questions from the audience. There was a huge emphasis on teamwork within the company, what types of companies employ Deloitte's services, what type of work is done during the summer internship and what does Deloitte do in order to keep morale high within a high stress industry. There were a total of five questions asked, two of which were asked from Sigma Psi Lambda members, 1 from a Beta Alpha Psi member, 1 from a Delta Sigma Pi pledge, and 1 from a Delta Sigma Pi Brother.

This event was both informative for those brothers who wish to follow a career in consulting, and also useful to the chapter because we were able to interact on a professional level with Sigma Psi Lambda, Beta Alpha Psi, non-affiliated students from the university, as well as some people who work within Deloitte. This was a very interesting event, and many people enjoyed being able to speak to a recruiter about getting a job at many brothers' dream company.
