What made you want to play volleyball professionally?

Volleyball has been such a big part of my life for so long and I have so much passion for the sport I wanted to continue playing and pursue my dreams of playing at the next level. I knew if I didn’t play professional after I graduated I would miss it too much. Getting the chance to live in a different country, while playing a sport that you love, why would you not want to!

How did you go about getting one (contract)?

I work with Bring It Promotions, an agency that places individuals seeking to play on a professional team internationally. Bring It also does international tours for college and club teams. I had the opportunity to do two international tours with my club team in high school and while I was playing at Colorado State University. These tours both give you an opportunity to see what playing professionally is like because you get to travel through Europe playing professional club teams. After these tours it was my dream to play internationally. Bring it also does exposure tours for individuals seeking to play, which I would highly recommend for anyone who is looking into playing professional. Players have the opportunity to do these exposure tours just for the experience or to get placed on a team.

What sorts of things are included in a contract?

From personal experience the normal things to receive in your contract include:

Player’s salary

Round trip ticket

Insurance

Housing

Vehicle

Meals accommodated by a restaurant who may sponsor your team

How was my experience playing in Croatia?

I played my first year for Split, Croatia. It was such a good experience, it gave me the opportunity to learn and grow as a person and player. When you are living in a new country where the culture, lifestyle and language are all different from what you are used to it gives you the opportunity to grow. Also, playing with new players gives you the chance to learn from those inspiring athletes, some that have played many years professionally.

What difficulties did you find playing there?

One of the most difficult things I encountered in Split was that our coach did not speak any English. I was used to my college career, for four years I was constantly getting feedback throughout practice and games, and then to continue playing where you did not receive feedback was very different. For my professional team our coach only spoke to the local girls who understood him. Luckily, most of the local girls could speak English so they would translate important information. Otherwise, it was important that you could be your own coach since we didn’t receive much feedback.

What did you do in your off time when you weren’t playing and practicing?

I was very fortunate because Croatia is one of the most beautiful countries to live in. In our spare time we would go to the beach, get a coffee along the sea side, go shopping in the market, go on bike rides, hike, go to the movies, and just explore the city! We also had the opportunity to travel and do some sightseeing in different areas of Croatia.

If you could have known something before playing overseas that you wish someone had told you beforehand, what would it be? What advice would you give to future athletes wanting to play professionally?

I don’t have anything that I would say as to something I wish I knew beforehand. I had some good advice before I committed to playing overseas. I would say for anyone that is considering playing professionally, if you are thinking twice about it, you shouldn’t because it is a once and life time opportunity. Although it may be a long time away from home, it is job where you get the opportunity to see the world, while playing the sport you love!

How did you find living by yourself in a different country?

There were five foreign players on my team, four from the U.S. and one from Canada, so I was lucky to be surrounded by these individuals through the whole experience. People in Croatia are very welcoming and helpful, making it pretty easy to adapt to the culture. The thing I had most difficult time was adjusting to the lifestyle. I recently graduated from college, so I was used to always being busy if not with volleyball I had school occupying my time. It was much different not having school and only volleyball to focus on, with all the free time between practices.
