⊰ ♞ ⊱ Endless. That was the word that inevitably surfaced her consciousness when she thought of work. But that’s what happens when you become a company’s go-to. When you’re good at your job, you become an anchor to depend on. Today had been particularly strenuous, as she was called into a field job, partnered with a clumsy newbie, too cocky to realize the threats their carelessness posed on a mission. Like always, Isabella ended up doing all the leg work. Not to mention the paperwork that accompanied afterwards.
So when her gaze met William’s on the train after work, it was nothing short of cold collected hunger.
It was a strange routine of theirs now. A secret held close. If not for fear of their reputations, or their lives, but for distrust towards each other. They were both a means to an end, a way to relax in these stressful professions. Nothing more, nothing less.
Yet, these little ‘breathers’ they shared together were an ironic sense of stress in themselves. Despite their close skinship, they would always remain guarded towards each other for the sake of their companies. Isabella believed it had always been that way. Since university anyway.
She stepped off at the next stop, knowing William would get off at the next. With this, they wouldn’t be seen together. Their destination was the same however. She shot a glance over her shoulder towards the impassive male, a look that conveyed he shouldn’t waist any time in joining her, brisk steps echoing as she left the train with a defined and sharp click in each footfall. Not that he probably thought much of her glances. They probably irritated him more than anything. Though, she knew he, like herself, wouldn’t tolerate her if she was exceptionally irritating. Otherwise, what was the point?
She unlocked the door to the small vacation home owned by her family, typically abandoned making it ideal for these such visits, and hung up her coat, making her way to the master bedroom and stripping to shower, letting the hot water steam up the mirrors and turn her skin red. William would be there soon, depending on his pace, he knew the way in.
