Every year on the first day of class, Neptune makes the “I teach charms because I’m so charming” joke and every year, it totally fails. Neptune is a master at water magic, and has literally written the textbook on how to use water for every purpose. Neptune has an old rival who was gunning for the position, but relished in receiving the mark instead. Neptune is currently in cahoots with Saturn, working on a specific line of poisons in case that rival comes back. Is Neptune a little paranoid? We think so. But Neptune makes for a fantastic teacher if you can get past all of the anxiety.

URANUS reminds me of a knowing smile, a well-loved vegetable garden, cups of tea, an always open office door, good wine, blueberry pie, all-out holiday decorations, infectious laughter, vague yet sound advice, flowers, open windows, a crackling fireplace, a wall full of dream journals, a spotlight shining on a stage, old Hollywood, books, a cluttered desk .

BIOGRAPHY

Matilda was the first in her family to be born a witch, which caused some confusion in her life, to say the least. She lost her mother early on to the Bubonic Plague and, after that, it was just her and her father and their family farm. Her psychic magic inclination manifested itself when she was a kid, though she didn’t know that being able to read her father’s thoughts was anything out of the ordinary. Money was tight, though, and although Matilda would have been content living on that farm forever, her father arranged for her to be married to the son of a Blacksmith as soon as she was of age. Whether she loved him or not was never important; she became a wife and a mother, just like she had always felt she was supposed to be; together, they raised three beautiful children. Matilda stopped aging at a normal rate when she was in her 20s, though, and she watched her family grow up and die while she seemed to be frozen in time, no explanation available to her. By the time she outlived her great-grandchildren, Matilda was convinced she was cursed. Her family was, too, and eventually she was cast out on her own. Matilda was never meant to be alone.

The crazier she thought she was, the more Matilda retreated to her mind; eventually, she unknowingly taught herself how to travel to the Astral Plane, as it became a better place to be than reality. Then again, she assumed it was a hallucination and not a real place. It was there that she met the witch that had then been sponsored by Virgo, and over time, the two of them figured out how to make a connection on Earth. Matilda left to join the then-Virgo to study at a small makeshift school in Paris, where she began to heal just by knowing there was an explanation to everything. Matilda looked at her time in Paris as an opportunity to truly reinvent herself and figure out all she was capable of. Her psychic abilities combined with her maternal nature led her to be the ideal (and final) candidate to be sponsored by Rosa before the constellation’s official retirement. Paris had truly saved her, and when she left that school almost fifty years later, she was an entirely new person.

When she finally landed at Polaris, it felt like home. It had started off as an opportunity for her to give back to a community that essentially breathed life back into her, but it eventually became a lot more than that. Matilda thrives in a family-like environment, and that’s what Polaris is to her. She’s eccentric, to say the least; centuries of living primarily in her own mind, the minds of others, learning the magical art of divination and dreams–well, she’s not the most rooted in reality. As odd as she is, though, her inherently kind, maternal nature and her passion for teaching has her well-loved by the students. Plus, she’s got some pretty fun fire tricks up her sleeve, which always come in handy when she needs to grab the attention of a room. Her classes can be unconventional, but they’re effective.

An out of place aside: Outside of practicing magic, Matilda has always romanticized acting and has done so to varying degrees over the centuries, starting soon after she reached Paris. She’s performed in various stage productions across Europe and America, and even did a small stint in Hollywood movies in the 50s & 60s for the hell of it. She has a lot of good stories once you drag that fact out of her. Also, she’s 100% tried to put on various drama productions at Polaris over the years… to varying degrees of success. But whatever, it makes her happy.

Over the years, she’s truly perfected most aspects of psychic magic, but she’s careful to respect the boundaries of others at Polaris unless she fears for someone’s safety. The last time she broke her own rule was seven years back when a student, nearing the end of their tenure at Polaris, was starting to edge toward being overwhelmed by dark magic, something completely out of character for them. Matilda had tried to raise concerns, but no one would listen to her, so she read that student’s mind. Through mental communication and manipulation, to her horror, Matilda came to find that that student was being manipulated and controlled by another powerful psychic, and that student had been taken over too much to come back on their own. Matilda tried to take over that student’s mind, fighting an invisible force she couldn’t find the source for, but she could only gain enough control to get that student away from Polaris when it became evident that the whole thing was going to come to a head. What ensued in an empty field was a great battle; Matilda, knowing the student was an innocent vessel for whoever was controlling them, throttled back her true power tremendously for fear of hurting them, while her opponent held nothing back. It very nearly cost her her life.

After a few months’ recovery, Matilda returned to her position at the school with a newfound passion for Defensive Magic, knowing full well that whoever had possessed that student is still out there and was unsuccessful in their original goal. She’s very focused on helping students strengthen their minds and learning how to defend themselves in the event of an attack, terrified that she’s not going to be able to prevent a major tragedy from happening next time. The safety of her students is her top priority.

INCLINATION & PLANETARY MAGIC

Uranus is a quirkier teacher, but the students absolutely love them and it’s rightly reciprocated. With high parental instincts, Uranus is always willing to lend a friendly ear to their students. While they might use some unconventional methods of intruction, Uranus is a master psychic and while they could read their students’s thoughts, that’s a line they don’t want to go down. Uranus was in a major, life-threatening accident a few years back, which is how they petitioned for and created the Defensive Magic course. It’s their baby of a class, and they manage the spells and charms around the castle for protection.

CONNECTIONS

Inevitably Unhappy Ending: Matilda and this person (another teacher or someone from town) have been in love for quite some time, but due to a tragic precognition Matilda had, she knows that they can’t be together without a great cost. Whether or not it’s worth it is a constant, daily test, but thus far she’s maintained her distance for the greater good.

Wine Club: Matilda is from Bordeaux – obviously, she loves herself some wine. This is a group of people (students & teachers, of age only, she’s v responsible, thank) who get together every week or so, drink a too expensive bottle (or several) of wine, and just relax.

Lost One: This is someone who has an inclination for Psychic and/or Divination abilities who’s struggling in some way. Matilda feels a connection to them, be it a maternal feeling or something else, and she understands she’s in a unique position to help them. She exhausts a lot of mental energy on helping them, either through dream communication, other planes of existence, or something else.

Drama Club: A club for… drama. They don’t really have a structure. This kind of just happens when Matilda wants it to, and these are her go-to students that she wrangles up to throw themselves into some major production. They’re likely used to having scripts just shoved under their dorm doors in the middle of the night. It’s v chaotic, but a blast.

BIOGRAPHY

When you’ve lived everywhere, finding a place that feels like home isn’t easy, but that’s exactly what Polaris has been through the years for Echo. First as a student many (many, many) years ago, and most recently as a teacher, Polaris is where she returns anytime she’s feeling particularly lost and untethered. It’s only partially because of her continuous reign as Jupiter’s chosen one, honest. There is just something about being surrounded by so much magic that can rejuvenate even the most worn out of souls. Not that Echo is worn out.

Going into her ninth century Echo is as in love with exploring life as she ever was. Every day brings something new, and despite having plenty of years to fill, she has no time to waste on boredom. There is too much to see and learn. The never-ending thirst for knowledge and new life experiences has been the driving force in her life for as long as she can remember. Reinvention is the spice of life, or some such saying she’s seen stamped on the side of coffee mugs over the years. As cliche as it is, there’s truth to it.

Being raised on magic, Echo was a natural controlling lightening and brewing storms out of little more than a single cloud in the sky. It came easy to her. People threw around words like “natural” and “talented” or “genius.” Okay, so no one ever said the last one, but she was constantly praised for her magical gifts. With everyone around her so sure she’d found her magical calling, Echo struggled to figure out why she still felt empty. People went their whole lives trying to find out exactly what they were good at, and here she was handed it all on a silver platter. The overwhelming feeling over being unfulfilled made no sense. For a long time, she shunned her magical roots out of some misguided protest.

It wasn’t until she discovered the art of drag that things began to change. Beginning like most future queens with a palette of cheap makeup and a pair of heels, Echo began to flourish. Dingy nightclubs filled with rowdy people became her stomping ground. As her makeup skills increased, so did her curiosity of learning more. Combining her natural talent in magic with her creativity of expression, the study of transfiguration was finally a way for her to explore her love without turning her back on her roots. It was at this realization that she finally felt whole again.

These days Echo is more likely to be found avoiding her office hours while pawning off the menial task of grading assignments to her PA than she is of headlining a club. Polaris halls have become her runway for now, but like most things in her life, Echo is more than willing to change it up the second that boredom begins to creep in.

INCLINATION & PLANETARY MAGIC

Jupiter, known to Holst as the bringer of jollity, has a huge personality and maybe takes the “supreme ruler of the gods” thing a little seriously. Obviously it’s a gigantic honor to be Jupiter, and Jupiter definitely takes a bias to the air students. The current Jupiter, as per all former Jupiters, is extremely gifted with lightning and storm magic, as well as the current master in transfiguration.

CONNECTIONS

Walk Walk Fashion Baby - Shopping, like sex, are better done in groups. (her words). So Echo needs a couple black card (or at least platinum card) armed friends to spend hours shopping and talking fashion.

You Raise Me Up - a current or former air student that is more than willing to do all the things that Echo finds dull about teaching. She wouldn’t be able to live without them, and she is dramatic enough to tell them as much on the regular.

Meet SANTIAGO INCLÁN. They are SIX HUNDRED and FIFTY-THREE years old and hail from VILLA NUEVA, GUATEMALA. Santiago embodies the constellation, BÉLÉNOS and the planet MARS. They use he/him pronouns. Name teaches ELEMENTAL FIRE MAGIC and CRYSTAL APPLICATION at Polaris. Their faceclaim is OSCAR ISAAC.

MARS reminds me of knowing that ashes tell you everything of what once was. utter comfort in the heat, yet needing bundles of layers come the winter-time. the warmth of a crystal in your hand when it connects with you, better than any wand. the smile of your best friend who pulls you out when the wild feelings hit you. still not knowing how to swim because the sea has always intimidated you. .

BIOGRAPHY

They expect him to be a man of war, but the irony is, he has always been a healer. A healer, a helper, absolving people by fire, because fire is not so synonymous with hell as is oft-believed. It can warm when you are cold, just as surely as it can burn you. He prefers to forget where he came from, because he ran from it when they needed him, helper and healer, and that is a great secret. A great regret, because he did not think himself powerful enough to help them; he only lived, he realised, through the great sicknesses that swept the land when the Spanish came, because of his sponsorship that offered him divine health as well as the healing magics he wasn’t certain he knew how to use yet. 

Now, he realises, any help would’ve been better than no help at all. Any help would’ve been better than running, and it was a hard task to find somewhere upon the Earth that was not torn by conquest or greed. But hindsight, unfortunately, is far clearer than present judgement. Perhaps with the gifts his planetary sponsorship provided, he would’ve known better. Could’ve done better. Instead, his country still suffers from the ripple effects of years and years of being under the thumb, and he has never gotten the courage to go home. 

His travels after, however — and Polaris — brought him Gaia, and memories before her presence in his life are so scarcely thought of that it could almost be believed that they do not exist. It was she who inspired his love of crystals, who helped him understand how they could be used to help others, and inspired him to teach such that no one else would ever feel powerless to help people in need again. 

That wasn’t always at Polaris, but began as he travelled again, eventually ending up in the position where he became known as something of a king of crystals; something that only ended a handful of decades ago, when it became apparent that there was competition on the market. Which was fine, really; wouldn’t have been fine, if he had realised the full extent of what said competition did with crystals. The sorts of things he didn’t do, but certainly had helped others realise that they could, and dabbled in the theory out of curiosity alone without indulging.

That she could kill, could meddle with time, pushing the very boundaries of magic; but as it always was with him, by the time the consequences could’ve been realised he had thought of his next big idea to change people’s lives, with his best friend’s guidance. He would return to his alma mater, and teach the healing and crystal magic he had learned properly, as opposed to a casual side-hobby. 

This decision, and the subsequent hiring, gave Santiago another gift: the sponsorship of Mars. Which seemed strange to him, until he discovered the interest was not so much in acts of war, but perhaps in divinations. A gift he needed, a gift he had long wanted; the fire he already knew, but the new novelty of it was that finally he would not run before he saw that people needed him. 

He could see what may come to pass, and he could act, it not happening in the wake of his already being gone to find the next step of his life.

INCLINATION & PLANETARY MAGIC

Mars is known for their abilities in fire magic. Everyone expects Mars to be bustling with energy, and with the connotations of war. However, Mars is more focused on a passionate individual who brings their brightness and flame to their students. Mars has been best friends with Gaia for as long as they both can remember, and they share a crystal garden. They switch off teaching Crystal Applications. The current Mars is a pyromancer, or a divinations expert via fire.

Filling the role of Matilda Chenery’s Wine Club

Asclepius: a student who’s basically a reflection of Santiago who he’s almost adopted in a family-esque way; they want to help, but they’re restless, and that doesn’t often go well together. Santiago is tutoring them in hopes they will replace him, one day, when finally he moves on from this stage of his life to the next.

Please Don’t Hate Me, I’m Trying: Someone Santiago is just trying… very hard to please but he just can’t manage it no matter how much he does. He’d bend over backwards to help and maybe that’s being taken advantage of.

Gaia reminds me of sunrises, flower gardens, dirt paths through the forest, sand sculptures, fossils in cliff faces, a huge hug that lifts you off your feet, that ‘momma’ voice when your middle name got added in, cardigans, lavender, herbal teas, drawing field sketches in moleskins, the first moment you realized you loved nature, the OG of cottagecore .

BIOGRAPHY

“You can call me Momma A” She’d assure you. It was just easier. In fact, after a thousand years of different introductions and traveling the world she’s learned that keeping things simple and straightforward was best. Humanity would have a way to complicate it regardless. 

Mother Akna, Gaia, “Mother Earth” and all other titles are aptly suited for this witch who has embraced her role of protecting nature and teaching others to do the same since humans first began to exploit the planet.  

Unlike her predecessors, Gaia has a calmer, more stoic demeanour to her than the sponsored witch before her who caused Pompeii to happen after the previous Earth Witch was tired of mortals ruining the world. She refuses to cause floods, fires, plagues, or earthquakes as punishment as an ethical rule of her own. No matter how much she grieves for the planet.    

Instead, Gaia attempts to be a steady, unrelenting, positive force of education on the world. Think of children’s programs for mortals such as “The Magic School Bus” and “Captain Planet?” Yea, she definitely helped to inspire those. Likely much to the dismay of her colleagues, Momma A often attempts to help mortals decrease their damage on the planet.

Representative of our own dear mother planet, Gaia is a master of earth magics. The planets and trees that Gaia grows are the most potent in their abilities. Gaia is the current leading source on plant magic and herbs. Gaia is strong and steadfast, known for their crystal garden and for their easygoing nature. Gaia is respectful of all plants and living things, but also is gifted with weather magic and wind magic.

CONNECTIONS

The Clean Up Crew: (Multiple; earth students more likely) Students who are dedicated to helping the planet. This goes above and beyond just class requirements. Plant some trees. Save some sea turtles. Clean up the beach. You know; damage control. 

Mother Hen: (Multiple; little baby chicks)  Anyone who’s ever had mommy issues would likely flock to Momma A’s brooding sort of care.
