Exactly. As I said in my response to the ask I just posted, the human/elf romance at least kinda works. It’s a bit cliche, since the man falls in love with the elf lady because she saved his life, but at least there’s some character depth for both of them. Plus, there’s some nice pathos because they can’t have children, and unlike the human/elf relationships in Tolkien, she has no way of sacrificing her immortality for him. 

The other two relationships seem to just happen because the author felt like they had to. Especially since one of them forms from the dude kissing the girl without any foreshadowing of either’s feelings.

but yeah exactly. i know it’s Character Development but i v much prefer the current hardened+realist girl/optimistic+level-headed boy dynamic over the smart girl/cocky dude dynamic. the latter is just in too many bad romcoms.

i also am v meh abt rly drawn out lowkey romances like this where they both know they feel abt each other but neither wanna approach the other first. i get why bc circumstances but i mean clearly there is still time for romance. i’d like them to just talk it out lol.

With you there is not one singular or primary thing our feelings/thoughts converge on, so much as general sense of harmonious interests and opinions.  I constantly enjoy your curated coverage of things I didn’t even know we had in common.  You are the opposite of “someone is wrong on the internet”.

I feel fancy and professional for the first hour or so of transcribing something and then I become painfully aware of how tedious it is

(Ladymeme hour): Tara Maclay

Tara deserved to have storylines that were about her and not everyone else.  I can think of only one episode that's really about Tara (all the rest are her emotionally midwifing everyone else, or about her and Willow but really about Willow's issue).  She was such a lovely character, but we never actually got very much about her hopes and dreams and desires (other than Willow).  She was there for everyone else and it would have been nice to see someone be there for her instead.

Then of course there is the fridging.  Tara gets fridged and not only that but its totally passive and inpersonal.  No one wants to go after her and she doesn't even get to die a hero's death (jumping in front of the line of fire or sacrificing herself to accomplish something important etc).  She's just a random casualty, collateral damage used to send Willow off the deep end in a narrative that is usually reserved for manpain. Not to mention, we could certainly have used Tara in season 7 with Giles gone a lot of the time, to be the conscience of the group.  Even if she had to go, though, it could have been done in a way that added to her character.

Oh my god I agree so much with your Battlestar and Buffy answers. I was rewatching Battlestar with my boyfriend and had to stop because I just couldn't do Starbuck's frustrating arc again knowing it doesn't pay off in a way that really feels relevant to her as a character

Pretty much nothing about that show pays off ultimately.  It is so frustrating; because, it started so strong.

49 (Book Questions)

49: Which books do you think should be taught in every school? 

I'm a big believer in teaching books to a purpose, so I don't think there is any one size fits all book list for everyone.  You want books to be relevant and to do that you can't afford to get bogged down in tradition.  Similarly, you don't just teach a book for its own sake.  You have to think about what you want the students to get out of it, both in terms of structure/style and in terms of ideas.  It isn't enough for a book to be good... you have to be doing something worthwhile with it.  Some of my best experiences (both as a teacher and as a student) have been with books that were problematic or flawed; because, that's where conversation often begins.
