I have always been a proficient reader and an extremely poor speller. I’ve looked into the possible reasons for this. Most sources explain this phenomenon as “visual reading” meaning the person treats words as images. Instead of phonetically sounding them out to extrapolate meaning they treat them somewhat like hieroglyphics. But, I don’t think that is the case with me. I am keenly aware of how words work phonetically and have no issue reading words I haven't encountered previously. As I child, I was always in the highest tier reading group. Paradoxically, I consistently failed spelling tests no matter how hard I studied. This kind of thing is found in children with ADD and ADHD. I wonder if that was my issue all along and I sort of just slipped through the cracks. Now, I’m an adult who can’t spell a lick without the assistance of modern technology. I wonder if I would have done much better in school had I been born a few years later, once computer use was ubiquitous in the classroom. Interesting to think about.
