Tech Policy Press - The Past, Present, and Future of the US Information Integrity Field Dean Jackson / Nov 16, 2025 Dean Jackson: One of the most important takeaways I took from the workshop was the idea that content moderation is essential to have public discourse and free speech on the internet that you can’t really express yourself meaningfully if there’s a constant parade of bad actors marching through the space where you’re trying to speak. You can’t express yourself safely and confidently in the middle of a neo-Nazi demonstration. And that’s what so much of the internet becomes without content moderation. It becomes a space where really motivated people with bad intentions and extreme views can mobilize and drown out the rest of the public.

There’s a difference between moderation and censorship and it seems like what we’re getting with social media is censorship rather than moderation. We get automated gatekeeping, scammers and scam ads, shadowbanning of facts, manipulative information gaming by the wealthy, PR and inauthentic operations by industry, disinformation by bad actors, the silencing of the general public by automated processes for which there is no easy way for a regular person to protest, and an absence of actual moderation or safety measures for the public. It’s not a public square, that’s for sure.

My letter to reps:

The social media tech companies need to be broken up with antitrust laws enforced vigorously, and close scrutiny and oversight at how these social media platforms operate. We need more transparency and less consolidation. It’s obvious these social media companies are not good for you.
