Skyscraper: From 2012, my first commissioned motion segment created for @fastcompany magazine’s online version. The story it accompanied was about daredevils and adrenaline junkies and I wanted to focus on the human cannonball. The directive from Photo Editor, @sarah_f____ was “just keep it light”. Lucky for me, she is the type of photo editor who allows the artist the right amount of creative freedom, adding just enough art direction to keep everyone happy. Thank you, Sarah! The process started with creating the cannon out of an industrial concrete form tubing that had to be large enough for my actor, @jacobrushing to move around in. Its size also determined the size of the painted cloud backdrop, which we located at @schmidlibackdrops Thanks, Marko! Throw into the equation an overhead camera perspective, and we were forced to do some math to get everything working together seamlessly. From there, I was able to add my sensibilities to the cannon’s deco design, flashy Evil Kenevil-wannabe costume and cartoon-like storyline. On shoot day, we only had enough time for one take, so it had to be right. We made time for a quick rehearsal and then it was off to the races. For my fellow photo-geeks, we rigged the #nikond800 fitted with a #zeiss35mm14 lens to a #megaboom and tethered capture so we could watch the sequence unfold on the computer. Lighting was to mimic the softness evident in the painted backdrop, so we used a 12x12 scrim backed by two #profotomagnum and a set of cutters were placed on the bottom edge of the scrim to minimize falloff. We cautiously shot way too many frames which gave us tremendous flexibility in the final edit. (The total run time had to be under a minute, preferably 45 seconds) When the final edit was done, I handed it over to my sound designer extraordinaire @kensluiter who masterfully brought the whole ensemble together.
