A late night word of vulnerability.. This past week has been a tough one for me. We lost someone I admired, which was compounded by discovery of some pretty hard things to process. I won’t go into them here, but it’s left me feeling numb and just in general, pretty sad. Combine this with being constantly woken by small children at all hours of the night, we’re both feeling it. This afternoon I took my dog for a walk along the route I always go, and took my little camera to see what the world might show me if I stopped to look. @jefftweedy said something really smart in one of his books that I return to frequently along the lines of that people have this idea that you need to be a tortured artist to make great art, but maybe that’s not true. Maybe we’re all tortured, but some of us are lucky to have our art to pour ourselves into and find some kind of therapy and peace in it. So, at 11pm, when all is quiet I pore over some pictures and listen to @mattdixonguitar’s incredible new album. More hits of ‘22, @france_soir_restaurant “Art of the Restaurant” for @swillmag. Few shoots have moved me like this one did. Maybe it was because it felt like I hadn’t been a bustling venue like that since before covid. Maybe it was the Jean-Paul’s astonishing passion and meticulous dedication to his life’s work. Maybe it was hearing the waiters sing happy birthday about five times in one night. Maybe it was one of the best meals i’ve had in a long time. Maybe it was the champagne. Who knows? Either way, I loved it, and I loved so much how it got laid out. More 2022.. @michalabanas for @domainreview “We could shoot her in a red auit on a red background, that’d look cool!”. “Awesome let’s do that!” Next minute- “Um they’re saying they want to shoot in a park near her house”. “Uh okay..”. With the wonderful @kyliegracethomson. Michala said that after Upper Middle Bogan people ask her to record abusive voicemails for their husbands. She offered me one but i said my wife tells me off enough the way it is. Fun tech stories.. because we were in a park without approval i wanted to keep it “light” (yeah look at that paper roll dickhead), so i tried tethering to Capture One for ipad (worked great) held by Kylie, and lit it with a single Profoto A10 in a Clic Octa.
