In your opinion, what are the merits of yeezus? I honestly couldn’t get into it.
a lot of things! it's divisive by design so I don't fault people for not liking it but I think it's cool as hell how he made a got dang masterpiece in MBDTF and instead of trying to top it he said "fuck it" and went in a different direction (sorta like what he did with 808s, just in the other direction). not to get too pitchfork about it but MBDTF to me seems like a declaration of "I'm on top and you can't not like me because I'm this good" and yeezus is a complete rejection of that
subject matter-wise he talks about some real important shit (I don't know how to phrase that without sounding like an 'eminem is the only guy that raps about real life' guy but I am not that man) and a lot of it gets glossed over because oh no he wrote a song about being a god!!!! but using his position to put private prisons and other overtly racist societal things that usually aren't questioned too much in the mainstream (read: white) culture is hella cool. it's also a reaaaaally interesting character study and there's already plenty of articles out there about all the ways to interpret the arc of the album but I could still sit here and post millions of exclamation points about how his character changes from I'm In It to Bound 2
it's not perfect because he's still all "misogyny" and you can so fuckin tell that he was working on a strict deadline in some of those verses. there's repeating "I know that we the new slaves" a few times and then there's "fuck fuck fuck I can't think of anything better to put in this spot and the album is due tomorrow"
but the album is fuckin perfect for making you powerful on the treadmill which is the most important factor in music for me. go back and listen to blood on the leaves that shit bumps
