Of all the tragic deaths that came out of this year, this one has probably been the most heartbreaking for me. Greg Lake has quite literally been one of the founders of progressive rock, being a co-founder, first lead singer, and bassist for King Crimson. He was the iconic, distorted voice of the 21st Century Schizoid Man (for all the millennials who aren’t aware, his voice was the one that was sampled in Kanye West's single, “POWER”). In my opinion, he contributed to both King Crimson’s and Emerson, Lake, & Palmer’s best material! His vocals, alongside his bass-playing, brought a very powerful, booming presence to both the amazing classic music that has played a huge influence on my own artistic work. It was distinctly his, and it was completely irreplaceable! There’s a good reason he’s been an influence to prog and rock bands through all these past decades. For quite a while, I always dreamed of Robert Fripp getting the first incarnation of Crimson back together for one last reunion tour, but as of now, that dream is unfortunately just that. Regardless, Lake’s music will certainly live on and inspire many proggers to come. I’d like to believe he’s now up there somewhere with Keith Emerson. R.I.P.
