LJS 179 - Della natura delle cose libri VI

This manuscript is a 17th-century Italian translation of De rerum natura by Alessandro Marchetti, a generally anti-Aristotelian teacher of philosophy and mathematics at Pisa. The publication of this translation was forbidden in Italy, so it was still being copied by hand in the 18th century. The translation breaks off early in Book 4. It was written in Italy before 1746.

Banned Books Week is upon us once again. I am continually amazed at the way people (and institutions) will attempt to enforce morality. For the moment, let us set aside the questionable nature of popular categorizations of "good" and "bad." If our goal is to make others behave well, surely we need to allow them to form their own ideas and make their own decisions. If we only do the right thing because the wrong thing never occurred to us, that's not terribly impressive, is it?
