I Don’t Ship It...
Just finished Project Elfhome by Wen Spencer, which is a collection of interconnected shorts in the Elfhome/Tinker setting. And I kind of liked it, except... One of the story arcs involves a sixteen year old pregnant runaway named Olivia. Olivia ran away from some kind of religious group that practiced polygamy. She ends up hooking up with Moss, a Stone Clan elf who is bat shit insane and who has been growing steadily more batshit over time due to the elves not having invented psychotherapy and treating escalating craziness with increased isolation until the mentally ill person is eventually put out of his and everyone else's misery. I really, really don't ship Moss/Olivia. The kid has no clue of what she's getting into (less clue than even Tinker, who at least was eighteen and a little more mature, and also, Wolf is actually much closer to her age mentally/physically than Moss and Olivia), and while she does seem able to keep Moss grounded and in the same reality as everyone else, she's sixteen and suffering from her own traumas from religious, emotional and physical abuse. Which Moss is not actually able to address/assist with, because he's too busy suffering from PTSD and who the hell knows what other mental health problems he has. If the theme were "two fucked up people try to help each other recover," it would be one thing, but it's more like, "one fucked up person tries to use another even more fucked up person as a sugar daddy; it doesn't go very well." Another huge maturity difference relationship (That I'm not sure whether it's a relationship or just a found family thing, I'll have to re-read) is the relationship between a teeny baby assassin named Snow (actually her name is much longer than Snow, and very unfortunate, poor murderous button) and Law, who hunter-gathers for various enclaves/restaurants/communes. That said, I kind of liked it, I just don't ship it.
