Ch 3 Blog Response: Empathy

Empathy is looking and seeing things from another person's perspective, as if you're in their situation. An example of this would be what the Embrace team did about the situation of a million babies dying in India every year due to hypothermia.Incubators were very expensive to get. The Hospitals had donated incubators, but the babies who needed them lived in villages far away. So instead of designing another type of incubator, the team decided to come up with something more practical, something fit to help the situation of the mothers in those villages. They made the embrace infant warmer, which is like a sleeping bag with a heating pouch that keeps a baby warm for up to four hours. They had to take it to the village to test it and to understand any possible cultural nuances that might lead mothers to reject the product. Hands-on research like this can change your understanding of the end user, like it did for the Embrace team. They changed their approach from designing for hospitals to designing for mothers in villages. Often in industries and organizations, it's tempting to depersonalize customers; they are seen as nothing more than numbers, statistics, data. This doesn't work when designing for real people. You must see and experience their needs and situation from a personal view, from their perspective. Being close to your end user is critical to the success of a product. When you understand the needs and challenges of the people you're creating solutions for, you come up with more innovative, efficient, and successful products.

Empathy is the ability to see an experience through another’s eyes, see why people do what they do, and what exactly they need. This leads to the most significant innovations. Observing the people you're creating for sparks insights.Hybrid insight is an approach that combines quantitative research into human-centered design, which allows us to embed stories and real experiences into the data, bringing it to life. Empathy means to challenge your preconceived ideas and set aside what you assume is true in order to find out what is actually true, it's like a learning experience. You must focus on the people you're designing for and their needs, rather than what you think they need. While interviewing is an important part of empathy, because it helps us understand the person and their needs, empathy is not just interviewing and asking questions. Another important part of empathy is observation. Observing the person, watching them interact with the product. Some people might not be able to explain exactly what is it that they need, they might lack the self awareness or the vocabulary to explain it. Sometimes, just by watching people and their actions, you can find more than what you could have if you had only interviewed them.

1. What are some of the take away points you will hold onto on prototyping?

Some of the main things I will hold on to about prototyping is that you need to free your mind and be open and accepting of any idea that comes to your mind. You need to feel free rather than restricted, and let your creative juices flow, because there's no single right solution. You can be as creative as you wish, and have as many ideas as you want, and ask "why" a lot. You have to implement empathy and interviewing into the process, because that's how you find out what people want to see in a new product. Another thing about prototyping is that you must move quickly, not taking too much time with it. You have to make quick rough prototypes, gathering feedback along the way on every step, so you can use it to build on to your prototype and meet the needs of consumers.         When you are prototyping, you need to start with a "do something" mindset, and not be content to comply with standard requirements. You must minimize planning and maximize action. This is more efficient because you get results right away, and it is necessary to interact with potential customers right away in order to get feedback. Prototyping must be done quickly and cheaply, fueling lots of variations that eventually result in the final product. Innovators thrive in spite of time constraints. Being able to build a prototype in a limited time is an important skill. Time constraints somewhat help you, because you're then motivated by necessity to develop creative ideas at an intense pace.

2. What are some of the ideas and mindsets on prototyping that you know are challenging for you personally? Explain.

Some of the mindsets of prototyping that I personally find challenging would be the "do something"mindset, minimizing planning and maximizing action, prototyping quickly and cheaply, and working under time constraints. Unfortunately, these are all the things I am bad at. I am usually unmotivated; I'll want to do something, but I just don't have the willpower, mental energy, and motivation to actually do it. I like to spend a long time planning, but not a lot of time for taking action. I am also not good at doing things quickly, its just a weakness of mine. I take a long time with it, and eventually I'll just quit on it and forget about it. And lastly, time constraints. Like I mentioned previously, I'm kind of slow. It takes me longer to accomplish tasks than the average person I guess, so time constraints really limit my creativity. A lot of times, I can do better, but only with a much longer period of time. I do procrastinate, and time constraints really stress me out, to the point where I don't even have the energy to even try anymore, so I just do enough to get by. And a lot of times, that last minute effort doesn't even do much good.

3. What is the "bug list?"Identify 5 of your own.

A bug list is a list of everyday inconveniences of products around us, things that bother us and make things harder and slow us down.

1. when you can't close the youtube app and have the audio play at the same time 2.  Vacuums are so loud and noisy why can't they be quieter. 3. The thing that tells you when to walk across the street takes forever. 4. School lockers are annoying. 5. Taking toothpaste out of the tube when theres a little left. There should be a more efficient toothpaste tube.

4.Come up with 10 ideas for your project.

1.Tubes that sanitize grey water as it passes through 2. Different piping systems for houses that separates grey water 3. Filters 4. A way to sanitize it and then reuse it in the same household.

Prompt: 1. What blocks creativity for people according to your reading? 2. What is human centered approach? explain your answer.

1. Lots of things block creativity. Some of theses things might be the fear of being rejected, embarrassed , or failure. Another factor may be not having the confidence to stand up and take action on your ideas and share your ideas, not motivated to go along with your ideas, being hesitant. I think the fear of being embarrassed blocks creativity for me, and also being unmotivated and hesitant. I feel like I don't have the confidence to get up and present my ideas because I'm afraid they might not be good, might not work, or that other people might not think my ideas are good. I feel like its a barrier blocking me and many other people who feel the same way, and once we get through those feelings of insecurity, we can accomplish lots of things.

2.Human-centered approach is when you actually observe, talk, and interact with users of existing products and services in order to better understand consumer needs, and gain perspectives of consumers. That way, you can innovate things based on consumers needs and opinion, and what they think would make things better and work out for them. Human centered design consists of building empathy with people you want to design for, thinking of many ideas, building prototypes for your product, sharing your idea with the consumers you're innovating for, and finally testing out your innovative solution by putting it out in the world.

Project Innovation provides engineering inspiration  – Nissan and Microsoft have come together to create Project Innovation, a ground-breaking programme designed to inspire Britain’s next generation of engineers.

Providing a unique opportunity to work alongside experts responsible for developing technologies used around the world, the programme gives a lucky individual the chance to win a once in a lifetime trip to see the R&D facilities of both Nissan and Microsoft.

Following a call for budding engineers to enter their top ideas for the ‘connected car’ three finalists were selected to go through to a two-day workshop where they were partnered with Nissan and Microsoft experts to come up with ideas for the car of the future.

The three finalists included John Scott who has proposed Journey Portal, an app that reads signs, records information from your journey and allow you to review what you’ve seen at home later, Aaron Daubney who put forward an idea to maximise time and efficiency with a transparent windscreen display, allowing you to review schedules, send emails, connect with friends, and Sam Furniss who suggested a karaoke system which could link drivers in different cars to reduce the boredom of traffic jams.

Nissan and Microsoft are now calling on the British public to visit the MSN Project Innovation hub and see for themselves the ideas that stemmed from the two-day workshop and vote for their favourite. The winner will be announced on December 29. Guillaume Masurel, Marketing Director, Nissan Motor GB said “Innovation is at the heart of what we do at Nissan as we continuously strive to improve the driving experience for our customers.”

Project Innovation provided a platform for budding engineers and motoring enthusiasts to discuss ideas that could transform the automotive industry and I am really excited by the ideas and concepts put forward by our three finalists.”

The lucky winner will receive an exclusive behind the scenes glimpse of Nissan and Microsoft’s R&D facilities in Seattle and San Diego, where research is being conducted into future automotive technologies and computer systems respectively.
