Project Springfield: Creating the multi-layered 3D Landscape from The Simpsons -- by Kyle McCoy If you grew up at any point in the last four decades, chances are that you're a fan of the The Simpsons. Chances are slightly slimmer, though, that you did what top fanboy Kyle McCoy did ... and reconstructed the entire fictional city of Springfield out of 140,000 tiny pearls of plastic. (They're called "perler beads.") The finished piece, which Kyle recently unveiled at a party in his hometown, is over ten feet long and four feet high, and took more than two years to complete. There are 166 individually constructed characters, ranging from barfly Barney to The Simpsons themselves, and 54 locations, like Moe's Tavern and Apu's Kwik-E-Mart. Any Simpsons fan worth their salt will know what I mean when I say: "Who needs the Kwik-E-Mart? I dooooo!" And now, with a little help from Kyle McCoy, I have it! Kyle stands proudly in front of his completed mini-Springfield. Kyle, at work on some of the 166 Simpsons' characters which graced the final piece.
