"Dance all night - mmmh - all day. Don't let nothin... way"
You hummed along with the music that drifted through the room. Your eye was wide as you carefully brushed the wand of your mascara against your lashes. You leaned back slightly, turning your head from side to side as you admired your work. You smiled, fluffing up your hair, eyes raking over your body.
Your friend Eddie had set you up on a blind date with his 'most eligible bachelor friend.'
You had been single for a bit, living out the single life to the fullest, but had decided maybe it was time to put yourself back out there. You liked being single, and having nonsensical fun, but you were itching for something more permanent. And you had made the mistake of telling this to your nosiest friend, dear sweet Eddie. He immediately jumped to help you, begging you to let him use his 'cupid's touch' on you. You had agreed under the promise that he would never say cupid's touch again.
So here you were, sitting at your vanity getting ready to meet up with the high praised mystery guy Eddie insisted you would love. You reached for your hairspray, stomach dropping at the light feeling of it in your hand. Still, you brought it up to your hair, pressing down on the nozzle only to be met with the hissing sound of air.
"Oh you've got to be kidding me!" You stared at Farrah Fawcett's beautiful face. "You're really going to do this to me today?"
A brief glance at the clock eased the knots in your stomach. You still had 45 minutes until you were expected to be at the restaurant, and the convenience store nearby was still open. All was not lost after all. You took in a deep breath, smiling as you concocted your plan.
"Alright, just leave a little earlier, run in the store, get the hairspray, get out, fix your hair in the car, and boom I'm perfect."
You checked yourself out once more in the mirror, smiling at the stunning reflection before you. You grabbed your purse, carefully slinging it over your shoulder and giving yourself a wink before heading out to your car.
Across town, Steve was hastily clamoring into his BMW, pushing back the floppy mop on his head as he peeled out of the driveway.
You carefully parked in the empty lot of the store, strolling in with zero rush. Steve wasn't far behind, his beamer whipping into a slanted spot. You grazed the beauty aisle for a moment. Now wouldn't be a bad time to restock on your favorite shade of lipgloss.
Steve made a beeline towards the hair care aisle. You hummed along to the song playing through the speakers as you turned into aisle A7, your eyes landing on the last can of hairspray. Steve's eyes landed on the steel canister like a bullseye.
You reached up just as another hand swiped the can right from your fingers. You blinked, finally registering the person standing beside you.
"Excuse me, I was obviously reaching for that." You crossed your arms across your chest. A pout playing at your lips. The stranger finally turned to face you. Your jaw dropped in slight amusement. "Do my eyes deceive me or is Steve Harrington stealing a can of Farrah Fawcett hairspray from a lady?"
Steve looked like a deer caught in headlights. His eyes roamed your body, taking in the short skirt that left your legs looking unreal. He recognized you. You were one of Eddie's friends. He remembered seeing you at a couple of parties with that sad excuse of a boyfriend. He had always found you out of this world in both looks and personality, the few conversations he'd had with you left a lasting impression. He had even asked Eddie to set him up with you, but again... shitty boyfriend. He broke out of his chance as you attempted to swipe the can from him. He held it back. "It's not stealing if you haven't bought it. And I'm getting it for.... my sister."
You raised a brow. "Oh and is her name Stevette? Last I checked you were a single child, Harrington."
He grumbled slightly. "Listen, I really need this-"
"Yeah so do I, you think I buy hairspray for fun at... 7:30 at night?"
"I dunno, sounds like an activity a girl would do."
You scoffed rolling your eyes. "Alright, with that kind of comment I deserve it." You held out your hand.
"What!? No!" He held it tight against his chest.
"Oh come on! Why do you want that one!? There's ton's of other brands." You pouted more.
"Yeah, so you pick another brand. I got this one first!"
"I don't like the other brands! They don't hold my curls the way Farrah's does! And for your information that can was practically in my hands before you swiped it!"
"Yeah well- first come first serve!"
"But I was in the aisle fist, douche!" You quickly snatched the can from him.
"Hey! Who's stealing now!" He reached for the can. You took a step back, holding it tightly.
"I swear to god, Harrington. If you so much as touch this can I will scream." You gave him a hard look.
He frowned like a lost puppy. "Please!? I really need it tonight! I ran out of my last can!"
You froze slightly. "You're telling me you're buying this for yourself?"
Steve dropped his head in defeat. "Yeah, I do. Listen, I've got a lot of hair and that stuff is the only thing strong enough to handle it."
You bit your lip, holding back a laugh. "I'm sorry, Harrington. But I've got a date tonight, and I will absolutely not have my hair looking sad and flat."
Steve let out a loud groan, running his hands over his face. "Y'know you're not the only one with a love life! I've got a date too, and look at my hair!" He gestured up wildly. "It's a sad mess. I need this, I've been on a pretty sad streak recently."
The sad expression on his face almost had you caving... almost. You stared at the can. "Okay how about this... I buy it and let you use it to fix your hair. That way we both get what we need."
Steve thought about it for a second before agreeing. "Deal, just- do you mind helping me with it? The mirrors in my car are shit."
You smiled slightly, "Sure, Harrington. I'll help you with your hair."
Steve let out a long sigh of relief. The two of you hurried to the check out, Steve quickly sliding the woman behind the register a 10 dollar bill.
You started to protest, reaching over to snatch the bill, before Steve carefully bumped you out of the way with his hip. "I got it."
"Harrington-"
"Steve." He corrected, sending you a soft playful smile.
"...Steve, just because you're paying doesn't mean you get to keep it."
He took the change, sliding it into his wallet and handed you the can. "Yeah yeah I know. But it does mean that if I'm ever in dire need of hairspray you owe me a couple sprays." He smiled playfully.
You couldn't help but smile back, following him out to the parking lot. You laughed at his shitty parking job. "Someone was in a rush to get here."
"Couldn't leave my girl waiting. So, let's hurry this up."
You rolled your eyes, carefully shaking the can before tossing it to him. You watched Steve stare carefully at his reflection on the window of his car, using the utmost precision on his hair. The smell of hairspray wafted into your nose as he worked his magic. You leaned against the side, watching him with a playful smile. His eyes flicked over to meet yours every few seconds.
"Would you stop staring into my soul!? You're gonna make me mess up."
You ducked your head as you laughed. "Don't let this get to your head, but I don't really think it's possible to mess that pretty head of hair of yours."
Steve froze, his brain trying to compute your words. Were you flirting? Weren't you about to go on a date with your boyfriend? Why were you- was he going crazy? You giggled slightly. He froze more. No he definitely wasn't going crazy. He continued perfecting his hair. "You said you were going on a date?"
"Mhm." You picked at the non existent dirt under your nails.
"Where's... uh Weston was it? Where's he taking you?"
A small snort from you pulled his eyes to yours. "Weston and I haven't gone on a date in 3 months since I dumped his sorry ass." You looked over at Steve, eyes glinting slightly.
"Oh, so who's the new guy you're seeing then? How does this look?" He turned towards you.
You stepped closer, "Do you mind it I...?" You gestured to his hair.
"Oh, no- no go ahead." He crossed his arms, trying to hide the pounding of his heart as you stepped even closer.
You carefully reached up, adjusting a stray strand of hair. You curled it around your finger cupping it so the curl stayed intact as you guided it down slightly. Your fingers gently threaded through his hair as you helped guide his signature swoop. "I actually have no idea... Ed's set me up on some blind date. Apparently, he's Eddie's most eligible bachelor friend or whatever bull he said, he was really high."
Steve froze again. He vividly remembered Eddie calling him his 'most eligible bachelor friend' many times, high and sober. Blind date, Eddie, you... oh shit. Everything clicked into Steve's brain at once. Steve also recalled Eddie telling him that he was finally getting the chance he always wanted. At the time Steve had no fucking clue what he meant. And now he understood.
Steve debated telling you, but decided the look on your face when you noticed Steve at the same restaurant would be better. You stepped back with a smile, "Prefect, you're girl's gonna be clawing at you all night."
He blushed slightly, suddenly realizing that he had unknowingly labeled you as 'his girl.'
"Alright, have fun Steve! I'll see you probably Friday if you're gonna be at Eddie's place?" You called out as you retreated to your car.
He nodded, holding back a smirk. "Yeah! I'll see you then!" Actually you would be seeing him in 10 minutes. Steve slid into his car, watching as you flipped your head upside down, standing beside your car, and going ham with the hairspray.
He quickly drove off to the restaurant. He didn't want to give away the surprise by you following him and realizing you were both headed to the same place. Steve parked as far away from the door as possible, before rushing into the restaurant. As the waiter sat him down at the table for two he grinning widely, eyes trained on the door.
You frowned slightly as you watched Steve's car drive away from the store. He had always been a really good looking guy, albeit an asshole in high school. But he was cool now, like really cool. You'd enjoyed having him at Eddie's place, cracking jokes with him and getting slightly shitfaced together while talking about terrible music and movies. Weston had not been a fan, and truthfully you understood why. If you were a guy you were pretty sure Steve Harrington would be the guy on your 'keep my girl away from him' list.
It made you a little sad that he was taken. If you were being honest, you had hoped that Steve was the guy Eddie was setting you up with. But alas, maybe in another life. You carefully stepped into the restaurant, telling the hostess you were here for Munson. Eddie had insisted on putting the reservation under his name so there were no spoilers.
The hostess led you deeper into the building, guiding you to a table. You faltered slightly at the sight of Steve sitting at the table before you, a smug grin on his face. Steve stood up, pulling out your chair for you.
The shock on your face melted away in an instant, replaced with a bright smile. "Well well. We meet again, Harrington."
Steve gently pushed in your chair, before taking a seat in front of you. "That we do. I just hope this time you don't fight me over getting the last plate of chicken parm." He smiled.
You let out a small laugh, "Only if you give me a few bites. It's the least you could do for using half of that brand new can of hairspray."
His eyes lit up playfully, "I didn't use half the can!"
"You totally did. I'll let you feel it after dinner's done." You teased.
Steve laughed, his shoulders shaking ever so slightly. "Just so you know, I only put the pieces together in the parking lot."
"Ah, so you have a habit of calling your blind dates 'your girl?"
"No, but I guess something in me knew that I'd really want to make her my girl before the date even started."
You blushed slightly, "Maybe if you play your cards right, she'll let you."
"I hope she does, otherwise I lost a great girl and a can of hairspray." He gave you a cheesy smile.
You smiled back, silently thanking Farrah Fawcett for her amazing hairspray. And across from you, Steve was doing the same damn thing.
