Fey Morden, a man-eating man-hag, and a romantic interest in the New Thing I’m writing. How am I planning to go from cannibalism to romance? Don’t ask. Harder things have been accomplished historically.

"What village?" Morden asked curiously, serving the goulash.
"Blacktree," Cassian answered. "It's rather large, for a village. Of course, it might be a bit far, but surely not that far…"
"Well, it's in the human world, though, right? In the Fey realm, there are no villages like that. Woods and woods as far as the raven flies."
Cassian gulped, staring at Morden in shock. His face must have been very expressive. Morden chuckled, shaking his head.
"I'll tell you more later," he said. "Eat now, while it's hot."
That snapped Cassian out of it. He grabbed a wooden spoon and dug into his food. It sure tasted like rabbit, from what he could remember. It's been a long while since he got to eat any meat, and maybe he forgot how good it got, but this meal felt just divine. He gulped the food down, and then a second serving, until he was full. Morden now treated him with the enthusiasm of a truly kind host, eagerly filling his bowl up, offering salt and even something resembling spices. For a blissful moment, Cassian forgot that the hag ever wanted to eat him.

The door swung open, only a silhouette of someone visible in the darkness. With a mere gesture of their hand, they lit the fires: in the fireplace, in the stove and a few candles here and there. Now, in this dim warm light, Cassian could see the owner of the hut he so recklessly sought shelter in.
It was a tall person of unclear age and gender, with long, thick gray hair and luminous red eyes, dressed in green robes and pointy shoes, nearly tall enough to scrape the ceiling. On top of their head and shoulders sat a unicorn's skin, roughly butchered into a semblance of a fur coat. The creature terrified Cassian enough as they were, but then they spoke, almost sing-song, if not for the gruffness of their— low and yet still impossible to pinpoint the gender of— voice.
"I smell a human soul," they hummed. "A guest, then… Come out, now, don't you fear. I'm always cordial with guests."

Their weird arrangement, this spellbound servitude, did not feel bad to Cassian anymore. Most of the time, he did not even remember he was under a spell and could get eaten at the first hint of a mistake. Morden was fun to be around and a much gentler person than at first. He got some pillows, blankets and a duvet for Cassian's chest, rarely used real, magical orders now, and made a habit out of gleefully greeting the human first thing after returning from the forest.
The only thing Cassian worried about was the wolf. While Morden's leg was healed, the wolf still howled outside the hut quite often, and Cassian was still forbidden from leaving the house. Not even with Morden. At best, he got to stand on the porch and breathe a little fresh air, but Morden had to be there with him, and Cassian would get shoved into the door the second they'd hear the howling.
Today, Morden left the hut for longer, and returned with the biggest catch Cassian had ever seen from him. At least a dozen pheasants!
"My sisters are going to visit," Morden replied to his silent question, shrugging. "They have a greater appetite than me. Speaking of which, I brought some wormwood. Go chop it and rub your clothes with the leaves. If you smell like you're bitter, they might not bug me as much about eating you."
