      the   girl   said   she   liked   eggos.   as   far   as   comfort   food   goes,   jess’   is   strictly   limited   to   the   alcoholic   variety,   but   murdock   had   looked   aghast   when   she   joked   about   it   with   him,   so   she   supposes   giving   vodka   to   a   kid   is   a   huge   no  ---  no   or   something.   a   spooked   animal;   she   knows   exactly   how   hard   it   is   to   trust   when   you   lose   everything   in   the   hailstorm.

    “    we   could   order   some   thai.   i   don’t   think   waffles   are   enough   for   a   healthy   diet   or   some   sh  ---   stuff   like   that.    ”    sure,   it’s   hypocritical,   but   she’s   trying   her   best.   slowly,   trying   not   to   let   her   own   fear   show,   she   offers   the   girl   her   hand.    “    c’mon,   you   can   teach   me   how   to   make   them   until   the   food   comes.    ”

    it was pretty standard for criminals to   go running  when they say white-lensed eyes cut through the darkness,   hoping avoid a beating  from their gloved fists.   however,  there was one who was not  fast  enough,   and  bruce found  their  digits  enclosing  around the back of her  sweater,  picking her up effortlessly  as if she was  a  small  cat.     they realized quickly    that she was  just a  child.     however,  she was still an asset to figuring out who these people were  and what they were  doing.     their deep-toned voice piercing her ears,  the bat  growled,       “ ---       what are you doing here?  “

It was simply the first thing she had access to when the clerk’s back was turned and River wasn’t taking any chances. Not with those men after them both. 

“Cacao and milk and sugar...” The ingredients, but not the name of the substance. River ate hers happily, shoving the entire bar into her mouth in one bite and humming a tune her mother would sing as she chewed it.

The lost ones

Life since leaving the hospital had been strange, to say the very least. It was like looking out at the world through new eyes, and in truth most things were new experiences to Billy. Street names were familiar only in the vaguest of senses, and his memories of how things ought to look were somewhat outdated. His last true memories were scattered recollections from his time in group homes; certainly nothing past the age of sixteen. One name- Frank Castle- had occurred to him, but with nobody seeking to fill in the gaps; he assumed it must belong to a kid he’d known back then.

Now and again, he caught people shooting him dirty glances, looking at him funny. From the way the staff in the hospital had acted, and the manner with which the police had questioned him, Billy knew he hadn’t been the best person... that he’d done something terrible. Without any recollection of the fact, all the looks brought him was frustration and confusion.

Which was why he’d sought sanctuary in the park. Sitting bundled up on a bench, he picked half-heartedly at a hot dog, eating the fried onions one by one as he tried to encourage some form of appetite.
