Athal is born of the unholy combination from the daughter of The Mock Turtle and a Unicorn, and the White Rabbit, in the White Kingdom of Wonderland. The union between these two was met with complications, which saw the White Rabbit abandoning Athal, and returning once more to the Red Kingdom once his job in the White Kingdom was finished. Athal would then be raised alone by his mother, a soldier for the White Queen. Who would claim that Athal would one day become one of her two Knights. Athal’s mother however would pay little mind to this and raise Athal in the lower class district of the kingdom, with their existence soon falling into obscurity in the following years. Athal would grow up in this seedier part of the kingdom with his mother filling his mind of one day he would become King. Showing a little more of her madness as time went on. Athal however did not know any better and would often talk about this claim to the other children, subjecting him to ridicule which would often turn into fights with others, one such child in particular, a lion-being, stating they were also going to become king one day.
Despite all of this, Athal would still grow up to have a fairly average and normal childhood. Though when he was fourteen that would begin to change, indefinitely. A few years before this he had already begun his training as a knight. But at fourteen a sickness had started to appear, killing off people of any social standing. Then, following this, a darkness soon started encroaching on the kingdom. For some years the White Kingdom was left in the dark, which no one could explain or find the source of. During this time the sickness would claim many lives, Athal’s mother being one such life, leaving Athal himself orphaned. Athal would survive this illness and go on to live life alone. The darkness itself would also go away after a few years, inexplicably just as it had arrived. Soon after this the White Queen would track Athal down and see to it that his training as a Knight remained on track. Though she was now seeing over his growth, it did not change his life to become easier. Athal’s life would remain unchanged, despite it, actually. He would remain to finish growing up in the lower class, learning how to survive on practically nothing, on his own, in this crazy world. The White Queen kept herself from getting too involved, in hopes this would further make him the greatest Knight he can be.
A young teenage Athal is there when the White Queen imprisons a man, before he ever commits his crime. Seeing just one of the abilities the queen is capable of for the first time. It is around this time that the White Queen also takes him with her on her visits to the Red Kingdom. Because of his youth he was teased by Red Kingdom soldiers while with the other Knights and soldiers he had been traveling with, alongside the queen, because of his tiny size and thin form, making him look exactly like the child he was. But even then, as an immature and amateur Knight, Athal was very capable and talented already with his Knightly abilities. Athal is so renowned for his skill that the White Queen sends him on a few dangerous missions with her other soldiers and an elder Knight. One such mission involved an arson going around. He is able to help with discovering the arsonist in the months to follow, due to his incisiveness. Being able to figure out that the abduction of a child could have also been done by the same person who had been setting the fires, as an act of revenge of some sorts. The child however would barely escape this situation with their life, much to Athal’s disappointment. This near failure would inspire Athal to focus more seriously on his Knighthood, after.
Some years later an older teenaged Athal would start to carve a name for himself as a great knight. Though he still remained shorter for his age, which was still often the source of teasing for him. One day however a nearby village would be attacked by a group of bandits from a group that originated from the Red Kingdom. Athal would be sent to retrieve a hostage that had been taken during this attack only to find that they had been murdered and their body displayed disrespectfully in order to mock the White Kingdom’s people. Athal sent the soldiers he had been searching for the hostage over the last several weeks back home with the body, while he set out to personally deal with the bandits himself. Some time after that Athal would find the perpetrators and deliver justice to them all, by slaughtering them, as was his right to do after what they had done to the hostage. He then returned back to the White Kingdom, thinking nothing more of this incident. A few years would pass without any further incidents before, during a sudden, and ultimately silly rebellion sprouted up and he was attacked simply for being part of the White Queen’s army, being severely injured in the exchange and hospitalized for some time after, the rebellion being quelled in the same time frame as he healed from his wounds. He would then return back to his work as a knight once he had properly healed, and once more life would return back to normal for him.
However, a year or so after this, Athal would again be attacked severely by a dissatisfied former guardsmen of the White Kingdom who attacked him and a few other off duty soldiers with acid. Athal would again spend time recovering in the hospital. Then once again would return back to working once he had healed from this, too. Again the kingdom would return to a state of calmness. A year or two would pass before Athal is ordered to go investigate an incident, with several other soldiers to help him. Athal, along with these soldiers would later vanish and not be heard from again for several years to follow. It would turn out that Athal along with the other soldiers had been forced into a pocket realm and made to participate in a maze, having their memories wiped, and were forced to kill other participants in the maze. Resulting in great physical and emotional torture for the contestants. Sage, Callias, and Julian would all be aware of this through Callias’ adopted mother, who manipulated the teenagers into finding a sickening joy in these games as well as corrupted them to commit evil, not that Sage and Callias had needed much prompting in doing this. When the teenagers were later defeated after trying to send Wonderland back into darkness the pocket realm was broken, leaving any remaining surviving Wonderlandians inside comatose. Athal would be one of the few recovered and not succumb to his predicament. Eventually, in the months following being freed, becoming the only survivor of it at all.
Athal would remain like this for many months to follow, his condition and survival being described as tentative at best as it was unpredictable. Though, he did eventually start to wake up from the coma, returning back to life. Though he still suffers from memory loss for the most part, he seems to be at the moment making a decent enough recovery now that he is awake. Though has not taken up his position as a knight, for some time after, obviously. A year after the incident however, he does manage to feel well enough that he starts to get back into working as a knight, many of his memories still lost to him however, which do at times impair his ability to be as skilled as he had been before he went missing.
