I have debated posting this for a while, but I decided it's time. Yes, I am "disabled", yes, I have a walker. No, that does not mean my IQ is lower or that I'm any different than you or anyone else. Everyone has faults. I'm just lucky most of mine are on the outside. I think it's time that the world stops being afraid of our differences and starts to promote love and acceptance instead, in all circumstances. #Repost @au_tastic_me (@get_repost) ・・・ #promoteacceptance #presumecompetence I had a disagreement with my disability employment agent last week because as part of their agreement with employers you can be required to work a free trial before they decide to hire you. When I was with a mainstream employment agent this was never a condition. Yes I get the concept of volunteering to gain skills. I am currently volunteering in a different area and have done so often. This is different. I was asked to be prepared to work for free in housekeeping so cleaning toilets, etc. yes it’s a valid job I’ve been a housekeeper before. This is not about the specific job, this is about taking advantage of people based on the idea people with disabilities don’t deserve to be presumed competent. My employment agent proudly told me they are one of the only ones who ‘offer this service to potential employers’ ie offer free trials ie prey on the desperation of disabled jobseekers. If you interview someone, believe they can do the job, pay them don’t embarrass them and make them feel less than by asking them to do something you wouldn’t ask of a neurotypical person. Any trial I’ve ever done where I haven’t disclosed disability I’ve been paid. It’s offensive not to presume competence. Less time making small talk means more actual work gets done and what employer wouldn’t be happy with that? #competencedeviancehypothesis
