Paolo Rischonti, Props Manager for La Scala
First Time Props Manager In Need of Assistance
Hello there Tumblr Theatre Fandom,
My school is doing Thoroughly Modern Millie this year and I somehow ended up as the Head of Props. I have no experience in this particular area of theatre. I'm excited to broaden my horizons and try something new, but I'm also a bit nervous because I have no clue what I'm doing and I don't really have anyone teaching me the ropes. There are a ton of old newspapers and magazines in TMM (some of them I need to be able to customize) and I have no idea how to go about creating them. We don't really have much of a budget at this point but I want them to look as good as possible. Anyone got any tips or tricks that might help me?
Thanks in advance!
Quick rant: so I've been stage managing for my high school's productions since last year. My director actually prefers to call me the "props manager" or "director's assistant", since she does some of the stage manager's jobs like lighting cues, running the bulk of the production, etc. (she likes to be in control of everything). Well I really want to help as much as possible, but I never do anything. I sit at rehearsal for hours keeping the actors who aren't on stage quiet, and that's basically my job. I have to borrow someone else's script since she didn't order enough for me to have one, and all I do is sit there and shush people. Then, about 2 weeks before the show, we finally get all our props and I get to move them on and off stage. For the productions, I move props with my stage crew and get actors ready. She complains about me not doing anything but yet she doesn't give me anything to do. I'm not mad, just sad a bit frustrated because I feel unhelpful :c
