Episode 18 - The Red Tower
Constantinople 1204
Andre and Brother David make their way back to the docks to consult with Brother Merovac but encounter a group of Venetian knights guarding the streets. Brother David deceives them by telling them he is pursuing an escaped leper and they leave him alone but not before he recognises the flail-like tattoo on their wrists. Cultists!
They encounter another Frankish knight by the name of Gilles de la Grave who agrees to help them. He leads them along a back alley in an attempt to circumvent the Venetians but the route takes them right into the very people they were avoiding. A fight ensues resulting the the evisceration of two of the Venetians. Brother David dispatches another from the shadows.
Before boarding the boat the group decides to investigate the package they discovered under the statue of the Virgin Mary. Inside is a scrap of parchment which has greek and latin script on it reading “He will come by the bloody tower at the behest of his favourite son and supplicant and the city will run red with fire and blood.” Also inside are a number of folio pages torn from a book and a small lozenge-shaped, clay case sealed with silvery wax with dire warnings written on it.
The pages detail a ritual written in greek, arabic and latin that will locate the Devil’s Simulare. It displays pictures of flayed corpses and the segmented body of the simulare split into pieces. It lists the ingredients required to complete the ritual which include a portion of fresh skin.
They board the ship but Andre’s eye has become horribly swollen and, whilst trying to tend to it, it bursts from his head. Brother David warns that the eye was being used to scry on the knights. Andre bandages his wound and they take the ritual to Brother Merovac.
He is extremely excited by their discovery and immediately begins to prepare the ritual. An unfortunate Venetian sailor is captured to provide the vital reagent which Gilles extracts. Brother David completes the magical rites over a bowl in whose reflection they see an image of a rust red tower. Gilles recognises it as the Red Tower, which is very close to the docks. The group leave immediately, believing the Turk Sedefkar, who Brother Merovac had warned them of, is heading there already.
On their route to the tower they see that the orgy of destruction and mayhem is reaching its climax. The revelers seem oblivious to them. They muster several Frankish troops and head on.
Before reaching the tower they meet a group of Frankish knights lead by Sir Goat-Marrys (sic). Brother David had already met the noble during the siege but notes that he makes a gesture unlike a Frank and more akin to someone from the east. A closer glance in the light of the rising sun reveals the iridescent sheen of the Devil’s Simulare worn by Sedefkar himself. Andre, screaming the Turk’s name, charges in a fit of rage. The other two follow accompanied by their allies. Frank fights Frank as they attempt to strike Sedefkar. A clean blow to the arm dislodges his armour revealing the ture nature of their foe who flees towards the tower.
As he escapes a terrible sight greets the pursuing knights. A flock of horrific, flying creatures erupt from the tower and descend on them. Their allies are beset upon and enveloped by the animate sheets of human skin. The knights fight them back as the devilish things attempt to consume them. Among their number is the grisly remains of Renaud.
The knights cut them down and arrive at the tower. Inside they are met by a dreadful sight of gore and horror. Scores of corpses litter the floors of the building, some rotting, some flayed. On one floor they find a collection of human torsos arranged in a strange fashion, obviously part of some occult rite.
As they ascend they see more victims of Sedefkar’s ambitions to summon his bloody deity. They continue finally arriving at the barred door of the top floor. They break through and see Sedefkar attempting to complete his ritual in a room decorated with a multitude of illuminated scrolls. He stands before a large metal circle across which has been stretched sheets of human skin. A bluish light shines from beyond them from some other place. They waste no time in engaging their enemy but Gilles, struck by the Turk’s wicked looking blade, finds himself paralysed with fear and pain.
In their moment tribulation Brother David opens the small lozenge shaped box in a vain attempt to turn their fortunes but finds the warnings on its surface to be truthful as a small section of human flesh leaps from the box and attempts to smother him. Gilles recovers and, along with Andre, takes the fight to Sedefkar who is finally defeated by Andre’s sword. He knocks Sedefkar’s armour off, which scatters across the floor, and knocks him back into the gate where they watch him melt away, calling out a curse.
Seizing the artifacts and scrolls they return triumphant to Count Baldwin who, in gratitude, allows them to found a knightly order, “La Fraternité de la disparition de l'écorcheur”. He seems extremely fond of Sedefkar’s knife which he dubs “The Serpent’s Claw”. The blade is returned to the city of Zara in Croatia in the care of Miho of Dubrovnik. The other artifacts are left to Brother Merovac. Baldwin is later crowned Emperor but is captured and killed, falling to Sedefkar’s curse.
In a room in 1920s Venice, Freddie, Genevieve and Nur ad-din finally begin to piece together the history of the Sedefkar Simulacrum as they discover that the heretic monk Merovac and the fiend Fenalik are one and the same.

Episode 17 - The Dragon
Constantinople 1204
Brother David and the two knights, Andre de Troges and Renaud of Flanders leave the basilica and head to the docks to consult with Brother Merrivac. Passing through Venetian territory they are witness to the continuing suffering of the people of the city.
At the docks they see Brother Merrivac’s leper ship, the “Restice”. Brother David talks with some Greek sailors who let them use their boat to approach the vessel. On board the group meet with Brother Merrivac of the Order of St Bartholemew, a saint martyred by having his skin flailed from his body.
Whilst obviously not a leper himself, Brother Merrivac has a strange discoloured patch of grey skin near his mouth. His room is dark and he is obviously anemic.
They consult with him and he speaks of a cult that worships “The Skinless One”. He shows great interest in the talk of the Devil’s Simulare. He shows them an old scroll that displays the Simulare separated into many pieces.
He says that when viewed at an oblique angle in sunlight it is visible on the wearer and that striking it with sufficient force can remove it from their person. He is distainful of the cult and warns that the real threat is a Turk named Sedefkar.
He claims the ritual that the knights seek can indicate where the suit can be found. He asks them to find the ritual and return it to him, which they agree to do.
Returning to the docks the knights recruit some fellow crusaders to help them and head back through Venetian held areas of the city towards the Church of Mercius where they believe the ritual to be. The streets are quieter but many buildings are in ruins from the siege.
Strange things occur as the knights continue to their destination. They encounter two Frankish priests who are being tempted by a naked prostitute. They ignore her advances and pray in silence. Nearby hangs a Greek man and, scattered around them, the bodies of four dead Greek commoners and three Frankish Knights.
On seeing them approaching the two priests, in obvious relief, drop to their knees and kiss the knights feet. They explain that the dead knights had brought the hanging man to the priests saying that he had used Frankish blood to summon the Dragon that now stalks the city. The other Greek men arrived and it ended in slaughter. They move closer to the Greek man and hear him muttering “The dragon will rise”. Andre cuts the rope and ends the man’s life.
The prostitute, drunk and raving, tells that she has seen the dragon herself.
Arriving at the church they learn from some frightened citizens that many Venetian knights have already entered but there is an underground route through a cistern into the catacombs beneath. They find the steps to the cistern and descend. There are strange marks and jelly-like blood on the steps. A terrible odour that emanates from within.
In the large, water filled chamber they hear the splashing of something moving in the darkness. A small rowboat is moored nearby the entrance and a long walkway extends around the chamber. The knights enter the boat whilst Brother David attempts to sneak around the edge.
On the far wall is a large, marked area with strange burns on it. Hooks are hammered into the wall near strange sigils which Brother David identifies as being components of a demonic summoning ritual.
At that moment a tentacled beast emerges from the black waters, spewing a noxious fluid that burns and kills one of the accomanying men at arms. The Dragon! Renaud strikes the beast but finds its skin to be as tough as metal. He notices that the space below the thing’s belly looks softer. Both he and Andre attempt to strike the creature there.
The two Frankish knights fight boldly against the creature whilst Brother David rushes up into the catacombs to attempt to find some form of assistance. The other man-at-arms is slain horribly. Whilst Renaud is thrown across the chamber by the creature, Andre thrusts his blade deep into its belly, slaying it.
Now only three again, they ascend through the catacombs and into the body of the ruined church. The knights of the cult have already searched most of the statues of the Virgin Mary but the Franks discover a smaller statue that has been overlooked. Digging in the earth beneath it they find their prize and attempt to sneak away. Renaud is spotted as they flee and charges the enemy to hold them back. He kills one of their pursuers but is then confronted by an eye-patched priest who, chanting strange words, magically begins to peel Renaud’s skin from his body.
As Renaud dies the other two escape to the catacombs to continue their quest…
Another document in the archive holds a vellum sheet illuminated with a creature eerily similar to the description of the dragon in the Devil’s Simulare…
Episode 16 - Deus vult
The group begin reading the Devil’s Simulare which tells an interesting story from the time of the crusades.
Three Frankish crusaders find fight their way into the city of Constantinople as part of the Fourth Crusade and seize it. The city, however is split between the Frankish forces and the Venetians who both occupy different districts.
Despite his orders, Lord Baldwin is unable to prevent a large and unusual amount of looting and pillaging. A mania seems to have fallen over the invading forces.
The three Franks are summoned to see Lord Baldwin who has heard that a cabal amongst the Venetians are searching the city for some prize. He is keen to obtain whatever it is before they do and sends the three to interrogate a priest named Augustino who is being held by Frankish knights at the Theodosius Basilica.
As they travel through the city the three Franks encounter a number of atrocities being perpetrated by both sides and hear tell of a “Dragon” that is stalking the streets.
At the basilica they speak with four Frankish knights who are guarding the priest. They say that Henry’s men rescued him from being attacked by Venetians, possibly the cabal that Lord Baldwin had mentioned. The guards are uncomfortable about holding him.
Talking with Augustino the three learn that the cabal of Venetians, lead by a man named Remardi, are searching the city for “The Devil’s Simulare”, an item that allows the bearer to look like any other individual as long as they have removed the victim’s skin with a particular knife. The artifact is a suit of armour made of some kind of ceramic.
The cult, “The Unburdened Flesh”, has been manipulating the Doge of Venice to seize Constantinople and gain access to the Simulare. A Byzantine ritual in latin is rumoured to also allow the Simulare to summon the devil himself. The ritual is hidden in a chest under the statue of the Virgin Mary in the Church of Mercius.
He also told them about a man named Brother Merrivae who has a great deal of knowledge on the occult who could be found at the docks on a leper ship.
The interrogation is cut short when Augustino meets a horrific end, with his eye exploding in its socket.

Episode 15 - Milan - A night at the opera
The party discussed the next actions and decided to split so that Freddie could spend some time researching some things at the library whilst the Colonel and Nur ad-Din followed up on some investigations.
Freddie managed to talk his way into the restricted section of the library and discovered some interesting notes about the Unaussprechlichen Kulten. In particular a number of spells and rituals that were within it’s pages. He also discovered that chameleons were a known type of familiar that witches used on account of their ability to change their skin.
He also discovered evidence of rites that allowed individuals to transfer their ailments to another from around 500ad, the time of Sedefkar. This seemed congruous with our thoughts on the ritual that Conti and Faccia had performed.
The Colonel and Nur ad-Din returned to the Galleria and noted a large number of blackshirts surrounding la Scala. They discovered the identity of the dead man in the bath tub. They learned that the man was not actually Freddie’s wife but Vincenzo Gaspari. He was in Milan from Torento on business to investigate textile factories in the area. He was also a known communist sympathiser. Both of these put him at odds with the fascist industrialists.
When Freddie returned they all headed over to Faccia’s house to confront him. Instead they discovered Conti. A fight broke out and Conti was knocked unconscious. Whilst searching the grounds they discovered a cage used to house a reptile, most likely the chameleon, and Catarina’s dress. Blood stained the neckline and scales were found amongst the sequins. In the conservatory they discovered an occult circle similar to the one discovered at the warehouse. Unfortunately Conti regained consciousness and a fight ensued. Conti was killed and his body was found to be scarred in a fashion not unlike the Jigsaw Prince. His last words, “I cannot die. A brother of the skin lives forever.” indicated both his affiliation with the Brotherhood and also that his delusions of immortality were unfounded.
We left the location and returned to la Scala where the opera was about to begin. Taking seats at the front row we saw Arturo Faccia accompanied by Blackshirts and a strange looking woman. As the opera began the woman seemed disturbed as if trying to remember something. The time for the aria of Aida came, which legend suggested could be sung along to to grant the singer their fondest wish. Arturo opened his mouth and started to sing beautifully with the voice of Catarina. On stage the Sedefkar Simulacrum’s torso was revealed, Faccia’s fondest wish. Nur ad-Din, badly shaken by the experience became mute.
Arturo departed, accompanied by his Blackshirt henchmen. The party followed. Colonel Selmey sneaked by but Nur ad-Din and Freddie became embroiled in a bitter fight. Eventually making it past the Blackshirts they followed to where Colonel Selmey had already begun confronting Arturo’s men. In the ensuing fight the torso was recovered and the woman, now revealed as Catarina, were taken away by Nur ad-Din to the car waiting outside.
Selmey and Freddie pursued Arturo and soon found his body killed by the floating monster that Nur ad-Din had seen in Poissy. Freddie left to help Nur ad-Din but Colonel Selmey pressed on to track the fiend. It lured him down a corridor where it escaped through a high window leaving the Colonel to face a horde of Blackshirts. In an epic gunfight he fought bravely but was taken down in a hail of bullets.
Freddie and Nur ad-Din, crushed by the death of their friend, fled the city with Catarina.
Devastated by their loss and weakened by the horror of the previous days they escaped to Lake Garda to recover their wits and plan their next move. They had recovered the scroll of the head and the arm and torso of the Sedefkar Simulacrum and the next stop would take them to Venice where an old Irish priest might be able to give them some more insight into the tale of the Blood red Fez. As they prepared to leave a young woman arrived with a surprising history...
