Prop Study Feedback
• Intention. Why is it there?? • Mirrors - idea of reflection ○ Idea is automatically instilled regardless of intention • Why were you in there? Moment that you left was unclear. Moment of leaving and returning Intention was not nearly as clear as previous study
I very much appreciated and agreed with the feedback I got on my prop study. It was unfortunately a project that I wasn't very proud of. But being frustrated with a choreographic process has taught me about finding ways to overcome frustration. I definitely agree with the comment about the lack of intention. I didn’t really take the time to develop the idea of why I was "within the glass" and the moment of leaving the confined space was definitely unclear. There wasn't even really a moment to signify a change between the "within" the mirrors and "outside" the mirrors. This is definitely a moment I would want to incorporate if I expanded the piece. I'm realizing first that choreographing is so much easier when it's intentional, and second, that putting intention behind movement seems to always read clearer to the audience than movement that is intention-less.
Prop Study: Reinvention
Tonight in the studio I scrapped everything I created with the skirt and sort of started from scratch. Using the mirrors was sort of a last ditch effort that came about from feeling like I didn’t know what else to use. Basically I just grabbed two of them and started playing. The initial positioning of them came about just from trying different angles. I liked how when I stood between them it looked like there were 3 dancers. From there I came up with the title "Within the Tall Glass" which is totally corny but I wanted to show that the space within the mirrors was different than the space outside them. I start the piece "inside" the walls and there is quite a bit of slow movement that happens there. Then once the boundaries are broken, I leave the mirror space and enter the downstage space, then at the end returning to where I started. I was overall happier with the mirrors than I was with the skirt, but I still found that creating movement I was happy with was extremely difficult.
Prop Study: Day 1
Today in class we had our first work day for our prop studies. Our assignment for this project was to use the movement from our text studies as inspiration for this new movement. We also had the option of adding music if we wanted, and it needed to be longer. I am so secretly bitter about using props in dances, I usually hate it, and today I found myself again frustrated after attempting to choreograph with a prop. I chose to experiment with this long yellow skirt I have because I love the way it moves. I also thought it would be a nice addition to the movement I created for my text study. However, when I got in the studio, I found myself really frustrated at the lack of inspiration I felt. I couldn't come up with anything I actually liked, and I think this was because I felt uninspired. I think part of this could've been because the movement I created for my text study was so directly intended for that purpose, it was hard to feel like I was reusing it with a skirt. Probably because my initial vision for that movement didn’t include a skirt. So all in all, day one consisted of frustration, I'm considering scrapping the time I put into the skirt today, rethinking and changing props.
ATTENTION DANCERS!!!!
I need suggestions for a choreography project I have. It must be a minute long, it can be any type of dance, and incorporate a prop. I have no idea what prop to use. I've thought of a scarf, a hat, a fan..but I don't know if I want to use any of those. Anyone have any suggestions?
