Own team, a dream
Years later, in a new interview with Estado, Prost addressed the failure of the Prost Grand Prix project, his greatest desire after winning the Formula 1 championship. The team competed from 1997 to 2001. It took part in 83 GPs, and its best ranking among constructors was in its debut year, when it finished sixth and scored 21 points.
"It wasn't a failure as many say," said Prost. "In Formula 1, to get results, everyone needs to be deeply involved in the project, to have what the English call 'commitment.' And Peugeot, which was supposed to be our partner, wasn't. I also didn't get the necessary investment. I wasn't well understood in my country."
The French automaker supplied its engines to Prost Grand Prix in 1998, 1999 and 2000, and also privately criticized the way Prost managed his Formula 1 organization.
If Prost had left Pelé as the second driver, the team would have easily won the championship.
