Meet Qiana Williams, Co-Founder of #Protectourfutures
1. Qiana, what cause are you passionate about and why?
I am passionate about helping artists protect the rights to their work and be able to make a living through their talents. I am also focused on raising awareness for social issues, including homelessness, which is one of my key focuses right now.
2. How are you involved and what impact do you hope to make?
I am the co-founder of #Protectourfutures. My colleague, Lauren D'Imperio approached me with her frustrations as an independent artist being victimized by digital piracy and we came up with the concept for #Protectourfutures.
Utilizing my SEO and digital strategy expertise in marketing, I structured the online campaign for #Protectourfutures and have been blessed to have so many from my network of artists, producers, clients, A & R's, colleagues and friends jump on board with their encouragement and support for the movement. We have also received a lot of support from Indie record labels, unsigned artists, business owners and journalists.
With their help, we have seen over 9 million social media impressions in about 90 days! Ultimately, I'd like the impact from us to be education for independent artists on how to protect their work, develop and learn the business end of the entertainment industry and fight for their creative rights.
Simultaneously, we are also leveraging the platform to help raise awareness and funds for the homeless in NYC. It is truly an epidemic, here as well as around the country. As a mother of 6, entrepreneur and a born and bred New Yorker, it's scary to see how easy it can be to lose your home. Many New Yorkers are one missed paycheck away from going into arrears on their rent and there's very little accessible, affordable housing available.
I just really want to help open the eyes of people all around the world in a socially conscious way. I am a big believer in the "each one teach one" concept. We simply have to do better as a society.
3. What request do you have for our readers?
My request for everyone is to get involved! #Protectourfutures can be found across various social media platforms @Protectourfutures (@ProtectFutures on Twitter). Post on social media using the hashtag and we will share it (with the exception of inappropriate posts). I urge artists to tag me as well @Qianathegoddess on all platforms so that I can share and engage.
I've noticed in my findings that a lot of independent artists are utilizing the hashtag for promotion for their albums and performances, because we constantly repost and retweet them to show our support and appreciation. We want YOU to be involved and we want to help promote your talents as well as raise awareness about digital piracy and homelessness.
