In the UK they are passing a bill to criminalise peaceful protesting after lockdowns ease. This is our Home Secretary being specifically retaliatory towards Extinction Rebellion and the BLM protests in recent years. Without freedom to speak we’re a dictatorship. The above link is to a petition opposing the introduction of new powers being handed to UK police under the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts bill.

This comes in the immediate wake of the violent arrest of women holding a peaceful vigil in the memory of Sarah Everard—a woman kidnapped and murdered by an officer of the London Metropolitan Police. This comes in the aftermath of BLM protests against the brutal and violent treatment black people face at the hands of the police. This comes following Extinction Rebellion’s civil disobedience in an attempt to force our government to take serious action on climate change.

None of this is a coincidence. This is how these systems of power respond to challenge, to criticism, and that is exactly why it is so essential that we be able to hold them to account. To protest is to disagree, to demand better, to say no, and a government and law enforcement (both of which are supposed to be public servants) which curtails the rights of those they are supposed to serve to hold them to account no longer functions to serve its people: it controls them.
