Anatoli Bugorski
Anatoli Bugorski was a Russian scientist who was struck in the head by a particle accelerator beam in 1978.
On the 13th July 1978, Bugorski was checking a malfunctioning piece of equipment when the safety mechanisms failed. He was leaning over the equipment his head entered the path of the proton beam. He reportedly saw a flash 'brighter than a thousand suns' but didn't feel any pain.
The left half of Bugorski's face swelled up, and started peeling off over the next few days, revealing the path of the proton beam as it had burned through parts of his face, bone and brain tissue. There was virtually no damage to his intellectual capacity, but the fatigue of mental work increased markedly.
