to our biggest fans... @protonpacks.
@protonpacks & @pattyurs wrote on the blackboard, ✏ dan seeing jack's ghost at the end of ds.
he hates mountains, these mountains. even if the framework and the foundation had been reduced to rubble and every REMENANT of that inhuman place was scorched from the earth, those mountains remained. would remain, eternal, eventual. and it’s before them and their slopes and peaks, the soft snow glistening off the caps -- he sees him, him. the man.
shape no longer, face RESTORED, looking at him with an ethereal eternal love that felt stronger than those mountains. but it’s not that simple, it never was. and what could dan say for him except that HE TRIED, he tried. in front of those mountains that still make him feel a dread deep inside, his image appears, erasing them with his semi - corporeal form. a lump forms in his throat, and it dries. and well, he knew he had been here, right ? he’d felt him right from the GASP, right from the push.
it’s not time to cry now, dan knew but god he felt it so. the last time he had seen that face and those mountains his eyes hadn’t had lines around them. his hair hadn’t been beginning to grey. the last time there had been light in his soul, and though it was REKINDLED now -- it had been pressed down, smothered and stifled. the last time ? fear had nearly been a constant companion. he stands with eyes like his fathers, older than his father -- and it’s hard not to REACH, to pull and preserve. it makes him feel a deep longing and it seeks to replace the dread. he understands so much more than he had as a child, and even more than he had as an angry, vicious young adult there’s so much he wishes he could tell him, so much he wants him to know. but the echo comes from within, from all around.
I ALREADY KNOW, DOC. the feeling of pride wells up within him and it feels like a decade in this space. it’s time to go, he knows now. time to return and rejoice. time to live, and do so with no more fear. it isn’t enough, but he’s learned to endure with less, with nothing. and then it’s TOO MUCH, a memory already ingrained in his minds eye -- maybe, just maybe those mountains wouldn’t be so harsh to look at anymore.
maybe.

will liked the occult shop. there was something comforting in seeing the monsters they had encountered in pages, or some monsters they had never heard of before. he thought the ghostbusters were cool and all but it was putting a lot of faith in people. maybe it was because he had seen what happened when the mind flayer returned. how many people, who weren’t even flayed, seemed to help in the insidious cause. “ i don't love people enough to put my faith in man. ” he said quietly. will didn’t know what that left him with to believe in, maybe just his friends. it was the broader population he seemed to distrust. there was time for that to change though.

Book Recs for Shams let's Fucking Go. Most of these will probably be fiction, sorry. The Discworld saga by Terry Pratchett. Very versatile fantasy-satire series that isn't necessarily meant to be read in order, split up into multiple mini-series. Parodies many real-world topics in a comedic but sometimes very serious tone. I just reccommend this one to literally everyone ever <- Owns/has read over half of the 40+ books. Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys. Split into four POVs and recounts the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff, a ship full of civilians escaping the Russian army as they invade Germany in 1945. A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. Two women in Afghanistan from different generations support each other through hardships during Taliban rule. This one made us cry when we first read it. Will send more your way when we think of some.
