Porsche 904 Living Legend
The Porsche 904, commercially called the Porsche Carrera GTS, was a car launched on the market at the end of 1963. Its objective was to be used in competition, but some street units had to be sold in order to homologate its participation in races sanctioned by the FIA. . It was a homologation special, a very light mid-engine sports car, with mechanics based on the four-cylinder boxer mechanics of the Porsche 718. There were even versions - the 904/6 - that used an evolved version of the six-cylinder boxer of the first 911 . It was a small car, a strict two-seater barely 4.09 meters long and weighing less than 700 kilos in running order. Naturally, it was a tremendously fast and agile car, especially considering that its most powerful versions enjoyed a whopping 180bhp of power - there were even eight-cylinder versions, but that's another story. It was built around a stringer chassis, on which a very light fiberglass body was adhered, reinforced with tubular structures.
Porsche tried to bring the classic 904 into the 21st century. The prototype created in 2013 was based on the ultra-light platform of the Volkswagen XL1, an ultra-efficient limited-production car powered by a 0.8 TDI engine. Porsche came close to presenting its version of the XL1 - built around a carbon fiber monocoque - and enlivening it with the brilliant Ducati-sourced V-twin engine. Weighing less than 900 kilos and with a neoclassical aesthetic, the 904 Living Legend could have been a heartbreaker. Porsche's prototype boasted exceptional aerodynamics - the road-going Volkswagen had a cX of 0.189 - and smooth lines. The rims were similar to those of the first Porsche 911 Turbo of the 997 generation. At the rear, a single strip of LEDs could be seen, anticipating its arrival on the brand's road cars, as well as a functional diffuser and two generous tubes exhaust.
