Could anyone revise the story I wrote for English class?
The red lights on my alarm clock displayed that it was two o’clock in the morning. I can’t believe that I was tangled in my sheets, alone, for five hours. I haven’t gotten an ounce of rest that night. Thousands of thoughts and regrets rushed through my mind. Two more hours flew by, and finally, my head let go of reality and my eyes drooped closed.
I was in a forest where sunlight dappled the forest floor. An inner force urged me to walk forward along a worn path. As I wandered, I caught the smell of your perfume drift through the air. My heart stopped. Could it really be her, I wondered. I dashed down the trail until I came to a clearing. Daisies decorated the ground and danced with the breeze. I saw you standing in a elegant but simple ivory dress. Your red hair framed your face and your dazzling blue eyes shone bright. Butterflies twirled and darted in my stomach. You glided towards where I was frozen. I couldn’t breathe, think, or move, but I felt so alive. You were close enough so I could feel your warm breath hit my face. Your lips started to move but your voice didn’t reach my ears. I tried to follow their movement but they soon settled down into a smile. You leaned in and our lips met.
The screaming of my alarm clock brought me back into the world in a rush. Through my weary eyes, I saw the dim light seeped through my blinds. Fragments of the dream were still fresh in my mind. Not another one, I thought angrily. I stumbled out of bed and eagerly let the last sliver of the dream fade away. I wandered over to my closet and put on my gray suit and went into the washroom. I peered into the mirror. Dark bags draped under my empty, dull eyes. I combed my dark, short hair and left the room. I grabbed my suitcase, locked my door to my small apartment, and trudged down the halls to join the monochrome streets of New York. I lifelessly marched in the never changing ritual of the city in the morning. Focused men and woman in suits march to work, call for taxies, and wait for the bus.
I entered the spiritless office building where I work. Portraits of generic flowers hang on the walls and fail at adding pigment to the gray of the space. I walked to my drab cubical and set myself in my chair. A remnant of the dream emerged into my thoughts. For a moment, I saw the daisies sway with your snowy dress. I swiftly pushed the image out of my head and turned on my computer. The screen flickered white for a second and then my home screen became visible. I opened my email to see that there was a new message. I clicked on the email and studied what it said. It was a report from the last meeting we had in the conference room. I read the details and skimmed over the rest. I exited out of the message, then something caught my eye. I saw that I still had one unread message and it was about eight months old. I hovered my mouse over it and clicked. It opened up a email with pictures of you and I when we were together. A stab of pain pierced my heart as I scrolled down through the images. When I got to the bottom of the page there was a small note typed for me. It read:
I love you and I always will. We will be together until the city crumbles into dust and oceans dry up. I miss you. I can’t wait to see you again.
My mouth was dry and my eyes were moist. I blinked away the tears and closed the page. I distracted myself with rereading and analyzing every word of the report of the meeting. This continued for an hour and I decided to busy myself with researching potential buyers to sell appliances to until the end of the day. Soon the day was done, I grabbed my coat and suitcase and proceeded toward the doors of the structure. Once again, I entered the never changing protocol of New York city. Worn out men and women slog down the sidewalk, unsuccessfully wave for taxies, and miss the bus.
The sun had descended, leaving the world dark. I slowly entered my apartment complex and unlocked my door. The moment I shut my door on the world outside, my walls around my heart collapsed. Tears streamed down my slender face as I fell apart. My coat and suitcase fell to the floor. My tie came undone and my shoes slid off. I walked and sunk onto the edge of my messy bed. My hands clutched my face as tears dampened my face. Memories poured into my head. I saw your radiant smile that once brightened up my world. I saw you fast asleep, curled up in my arms and your crimson hair cloaked your face. My heart shattered once again. I asked myself, what did I do wrong? Why did she leave? Did I not love you enough? I continued to wallow in my despair for what seemed like an eternity.
I found myself raveled up in my sheets and the red lights on my alarm clock displayed that it was one o’clock in the morning.
