I know this was sent to me forever ago but here it is. I was sitting on my couch writing this, so I prompted myself "Couch". I hope you enjoy!
It's just a silly little drabble, okay?
"That's a nice couch you have there, Chief," Bumi commented as he sauntered into her office.
Lin had her no-nonsense look plastered on her face as she sat at her desk, not looking away from her paperwork to face her next appointment.
Bumi took a seat across from her, eyes still fixed on the couch in the corner of her office.
"Why do you need a couch in here when you're always at your desk."
Lin huffed. "Sometimes, I need rest. I can't always run home to lie down."
Bumi chuckled. "Didn't know you had that word 'rest' in your day-to-day vernacular."
"It's not my day-to-day, but come night...'" She finally peered up from the documents and gave him a little smirk.
"So that explains why your spirit-vine infested house has been empty for weeks."
Lin stared at him for a moment.
"I'm kidding- I know it must be tough getting rid of those vines- but for the sake of conversation, please tell me you've been going home and getting actual rest."
The metalbender exhaled sharply as she gathered the papers into a neat file. She opened the drawer next to her and pulled out a folder to place the papers and did away with it.
With her desk finally cleared, she interlaced her fingers and leaned forward, offering her full attention to Bumi. "What brings you here, Bumi?"
The ex-commander cleared his throat. "Tenzin has me taking over some of the white lotus duties on the airbenders' side. I just needed you to know that I will be the point person going forward."
She leaned back in her seat and eased up. "You could've just left a message- you didn't need to wait three weeks to get an appointment with me to tell me this."
The new airbender chuckled. "That's not what the appointment is for."
Lin raised her eyebrows with curiosity.
Bumi bent down to bring his satchel up into his lap. He pulled out a tall bottle mango soju, a tiny container with peanuts and another with some dry fruits. "Have a drink with me."
Lin scoffed at him- she couldn't believe his audacity.
"I made sure to get your last available appointment for the day so you have no excuse but to indulge me," the airbender added.
She had to give it to him- she indeed had no excuses to deny him. And if she was being honest, she could use a little break from everything. Restorations were no easy feat.
Bumi stood up first, bringing the spread to the coffee table and making himself comfortable on the couch. Lin studied him- trying to make some sense of his motivations- what his intentions here were. If he wanted a drink he easily could've had one without bringing her into the mix. Ever since he got his airbending, there had been a shift in the man- she couldn't pinpoint at what it was- but it was as if he seemed finally at peace with himself.
"Chief?" He called, pulling her out of her thoughts. "Care to join me?" He gestured over at the empty seat beside him.
Convinced, Lin stood up, bending her armor off so she could get as comfortable as him.
"Wow, I thought we'd be taking our clothes off after we finished this bottle."
Ignoring that comment, the metalbender grabbed two glasses off the shelf by the window, and placed them both on the coffee table before unscrewing the the bottle of soju to give it a hearty pour.
"Cheers," she said, sitting down, as a clanking sound filled the room.
"Do you want to tell me what this is about or should I just get drunk and kick you out once I'm ready to pass out here?"
Bumi placed his glass down after a long swallow. "I think I'm invincible."
Lin actually laughed instead of holding it in.
"I got it all, you know?" he continued, unfazed. "I didn't want to have a million kids to restore the airbenders, I didn't have to- I didn't have the right kind of bending. When I wanted to run off, I got to the United Forces and had a ball. I realized I wanted to run off because I felt insufficient- like I was a disappointment because I wasn't an airbender- I became an airbender. It didn't matter who was around to witness the highs and lows of my life because in the end I got to do exactly what I wanted to and not everyone gets to say that."
Lin looked at him incredulously. "Did you smoke something before dragging yourself here?"
Bumi guffawed. "No, I promise. Tenzin runs a tight ship on the Island."
"Okay?"
"I wanted to celebrate this with you."
Lin cleared her throat as she poured some more of the soju into her glass. "You wanted to come here to rub into my face that life has always worked out for you and celebrate that with me? I'm going to change my question now- what did you smoke before coming here?"
Bumi placed his hand on Lin's knee- it was affectionate, Lin noted, so she allowed it as he went on. "You're the last piece of the puzzle."
The metalbender continued staring at him. "Seriously what did you—"
"Nothing!" Bumi said with a nervous laugh. "I've always admired you, Lin. I- I think you're wonderful. And if everything ever in my life has been able to work out to my liking, I had to test this out."
"What are you saying?" She asked, still confused.
Bumi inched closer to her, hand moving from her knee to capture her free hand, intertwining his fingers with hers. He knew she could easily break all his bones for attempting something like this- but he felt bold in that moment.
"I'm saying, I wanted to have a drink with you. Well, I wanted to take you out for a drink but I know the whole city's been in shambles since Kuvira's spirit cannon. I know you wouldn't be able to enjoy yourself at some seedy bar knowing how they'd been affected by—"
"So you asked yourself out on my calendar and placed me on a date with you in my office?! Have you totally lost your mind?" She said, pulling her hand away.
"Now you're catching on," he said, unperturbed. A little smirk gracing his face. "And you called it a date, not me. And since we're on the subject- would you have said yes to having drinks with me- in a vacuum, all circumstances aside."
"Yes!" She said in a heartbeat, surprising herself too.
Now Bumi was sporting a wide grin. "Well, then I am in fact the luckiest man alive." He grabbed her hand again and kissed her knuckle gently.
"No?" Lin argued, allowing her hand to remain in his grasp. "What is it that you want here? You're manipulating the situation!"
The airbender shrugged. "I'm just having drinks with you, Linny. You called it a date."
Lin scoffed- she didn't like that old nickname resurfacing. "What do you want, Bumi?" She sounded frustrated now.
"I want to kiss you."
About an hour later, Lin found herself ensconced beneath burly airbender arms. Under her ear, she could hear the Bumi's heartbeating at a gentler pace than from a few minutes ago. She felt calm, at peace and she certainly wasn't wondering whether or not this was a huge mistake. No, she'd think about that later. For now, she was on her couch- and that was her place of rest. If it came with a bottle of soju and a pair of biceps to hold her, who was she to complain?
"You're right," she slurred sleepily. "It's a good couch."
