I made it to Salt Lake City last night after a thankfully uneventful drive. Today I let myself sleep in, and then ran around to various bookstores in SLC proper, Provo, and Spanish Fork to show off The Everyday Naturalist. I've apparently brought the rain with me from Portland, as both Boise and SLC have gotten not just some much-needed precipitation, but thunderstorms as well, and it was really neat to see the Wasatch Mountains shrouded in low, gray clouds.
I had to really behave myself at Weller Book Works, because their rare books floor? SO MANY TEMPTATIONS. I could have gone home with a first edition copy of John Muir's Stickeen--if I'd had four hundred bucks to drop on such a lovely thing. And that book in the picture, The Naturalist's Field Journal, would have been a nice addition to my library. Ah, well. Perhaps in the future I can throw some mad money around.
I also have to rave about a new bookstore--just about to celebrate its first anniversary--in Provo. Planted in Pages is settled in a gorgeous old restored Victorian house. The book selection is fabulous, especially for fiction, and if you want houseplants you've got some spectacular options! Very much worth the drive down from SLC.
Tomorrow morning (10/05), 11am I'll have my next book signing at the Bird Blind at Tracy Aviary's Nature Center at Pia Okwai. Really looking forward to it, and I hope to see folks there!
Trial Recap
A Preliminary Hearing is meant to test whether or not the prosecution has enough evidence to warrant a trial, probable cause. It's a low bar and this will go to trial. Why it matters? In the USA, defendants are innocent until proven guilty -------unless you're the patsy. Incredible to see the government tamper with evidence in public, tamper with witness testimonies, no grand jury...
Most Americans probably think this case has nothing to do with them...if our government can do this to college students, then what could they do to me, to you????

Tuesday represents day two of the five-day preliminary hearing for Tyler James Robinson, the 23-year-old accused of shooting and killing Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University in September. This is not the trial. Think of it as a mini-trial where the prosecution must show probable cause, meaning enough evidence for the case to move forward toward trial. The burden is far lower than proof beyond a reasonable doubt, but this hearing matters because witnesses testify, evidence is previewed and the defense gets its first real chance to cross-examine. Robinson faces aggravated murder, firearm, obstruction, witness tampering and related charges. The state is expected to call law enforcement witnesses, including Utah Valley University police and Utah State Bureau of Investigation agents. Lance Twiggs, Robinson’s former roommate and alleged romantic partner, may appear through a recorded interview rather than live testimony. The defense is also expected to present or question forensic issues through three experts. What should viewers watch for? Probable cause. Timeline. Chain of custody. Digital evidence. Forensics. Witness credibility. Any gaps between what prosecutors claim and what the evidence actually proves. Video from the shooting may be played and some material could be disturbing. Charlie Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk and his parents, Robert and Kathryn Kirk, are also expected to attend. Each day at Lionel Nation, we will break it down carefully, legally and without hysteria. What happened in court, what mattered, what did not, what the media missed and what comes next. This is where the case begins to leave the press release stage and enter the courtroom stage.
