Writing Prompt: Dialogue

“Didn’t kill him,”

“No.”

“He’s a liability, [——]. He saw us—He saw what we are—“

“He saved your son’s life tonight. He knows what he’s doing. Since the old man killed over we’ve needed another doctor—“

“Not him. We can find a younger one, one with debts, one that can be paid off and threatened.”

“He’s older than what you wanted, yes, but he has the experience, the knowledge. He saved [——] with rudimentary tools, and under threat of losing his life if he failed. If not him, then who?”

“Your senses work as well as mine. What did you scent when he was here, elbow deep in my son’s blood while he was screaming, tearing himself apart while half-transformed and surrounded by our pack?”

“…Nothing,”

“Nothing. He wasn’t scared of us, [——]. That makes him unpredictable, dangerous. We can’t have him running about out of our control. He can’t be trusted.”

“I… I think we should give him a chance. Maybe he can’t be paid off, or intimidated, but he’s still human. He must want something, surely. There has to be something we can… do, or hold over him.”

“[——]—“

“Or, if not—if not, perhaps he can help us find someone. Maybe one of the younger doctors where he works?”

“…Why are you so concerned about his life?”

“I’m not. I just—We don’t have to kill him. We don’t have to be monsters anymore, [——]. This isn’t the Middle Ages, for Christ’s sake! We don’t have to be the monsters prowling just on the edge of the firelight.”

“…”

“…I don’t want to kill. Not over something like this, not ever…”

“…He’s your responsibility then. Let him live, let him help us. But the moment he becomes a problem… he’s your problem, do you understand?”

“I… Yes. Yeah, I understand.”

“Say it.”

“…If he endangers the safety of pack, I alone will bear the responsibility. His life will be mine to take in recompense, and… and the pack’s to take mine.”

“…I hope you haven’t just made a grave mistake, [——]. It will bring me no pleasure to kill you just because your heart is too soft.”
