The time has come, people! Welcome to the PrUK Week 2021! 8 days to show our love and appreciation to this wonderful ship! This year the event runs through February 15th to 22nd.

We have a theme and a one word prompt for each day, so any content creator can be inspired to bring this pair to life in their work!

In Plain Sight

"Fancy seeing you here."

Gilbert turned to look behind him, then turned again when Arthur had already stepped round him. He rolled his shoulders back in his suit, tucking away his annoyance as Arthur smirked up at him. If the thief was here, speaking with the gilt bells of his voice and standing so elegantly in his silken frock coat, he was not nicking the crown Gilbert had been hired to protect.

"Fancy that," agreed Gilbert, eyeing him. The way those cashmere trousers clung to his thighs...

"Dear constable," drawled Arthur, "my mask is up here."

Gilbert lifted his gaze immediately. Chagrin burned his ears. Unlike the plain porcelain of the constables' eye-covers or the jewelled guises of the affluent ladies or the widows' dark coverings fraying with black lace, Arthur's mask bristled with feathers like a living thing. From the neck-down he was an exquisitely dressed gentleman, but beyond that it was difficult to distinguish where the uncombed hair of the man ended and the wildness of the mask began. Those green eyes peering past it were indeed human in shape, but their ferocity spoke of something else entirely.

Arthur's lips curled again. His mouth was messy, too-red against his pale skin. "Do you like it?"

Gilbert knew he should have been suspicious, but he was too taken aback by the sheer aliveness of Arthur tonight. All of their encounters before this had been glimpses on the street, an impotent interview at the constabulary, the gentleman thief strutting away from a crime scene just as Gilbert arrived to helplessly puzzle with whatever pieces Arthur had deigned to leave behind. It was cat-and-mouse, but Gilbert had always felt declawed.

Tonight, despite all the disguised men Gilbert had posted throughout the manor, Arthur was the feline. Gilbert could not believe how tempted he was to make him purr.

"I'm not here for pleasure," he warned, trying to stand at attention. A servant offered a tray of long-necked champagne flutes, but Gilbert shook his head. "I'm here for business."

Arthur's eyebrows quirked, but he smiled affably enough at the server. "Ah, thank you but no, my good man." His gaze slid to Gilbert. "I never drink on the job."

Gilbert narrowed his eyes at him. As long as they were talking, Arthur could not be stealing anything. So why did he look so smug? It was driving Gilbert crazy, in more ways than he would care to admit. He wanted nothing more than to take Arthur down a peg... and when the violins began to sing out a waltz, he knew just how to do it.

He offered a white-gloved hand. "May I have this dance?"

Arthur stared at him and ah! there it was, the wide-eyed look of unquestionable shock. True to form, he quickly tugged fresh arrogance over this, but Gilbert saw it lingering in the new uncertainty of his stance.

"But of course," replied Arthur, placing his hand into Gilbert's. "Lead us to brighter shores, dear constable."

And lead them he did, into the dancefloor of swaying hoopskirts and shining shoes. He was quite unpractised in dance and so his three-step was quite stiff, but - curiously - Arthur was much the same. He even stumbled at one point, and, though he recovered swiftly enough that their rhythm was not disrupted, Gilbert delighted in the sight of red blotches rising from his starched collar.

"I expected you to be different," remarked Gilbert. "You have the air of a prince about you."

Arthur gave a single ha! of laughter. "Oh, I hope not. Princes are so useless. Even worse than kings."

Gilbert cast a scandalized glance toward the gleaming royals on the other end of the ballroom.

Arthur's laugh was real this time and loud enough that he had to ignore a few disapproving looks from the other dancers. "Are you not the most dangerous thing in this room? Are you not hired for your teeth?"

Gilbert shook his head. He was starting to lose himself in those bright green eyes, but the music and the chandeliers and the decadence of this place and this night...

"I am hired because I know when to use my teeth," he found himself saying, "and when to bite softly."

Arthur's messy mouth broke into a grin. "Do you really."

"I do." Gilbert eased to a halt as the music faded. "But I am also bound by this. I am collared. My missteps face consequence." He raised his arm, white fingers twined with grey ones. "Yours do not. You make sure of it. And that makes you dangerous."

Arthur twirled slowly away from him and they stood there on the edge of the ballroom, Gilbert backed by the golden splendor of celebration, Arthur like a piece of the night leeching in through the open door behind him. The garden sprawled beyond, a forest of charmingly trimmed hedges and red-thorned rosebushes. The moon was only a sliver tonight; to step out there was to be lost to the shadow.

Gilbert felt something worried loose in his chest, the same sort of feeling he always got when he realized he'd lost Arthur yet again. But he'd won tonight, hadn't he? Why did he feel like he'd been left wanting?

From his waistcoat, Arthur withdrew a silver pocket watch. "Alas," he said, snapping it shut again, "I must draw this evening short. Many thanks, good sir, for making it an enjoyable job."

Without thinking, Gilbert stepped forward to grab his arm. "What job? The crown is guarded. We've had eyes on you all night. What do you mean to do?"

Arthur looked down at his grasp until Gilbert reluctantly released it. Then green eyes lifted to his face, bright with mirth. "I knew you would think the worst of me. Most do. So I had someone escort me to the ball, to ensure I behaved."

It took Gilbert a moment to unravel this. If all eyes were on Arthur, and the guards were only outside the throne room, and anyone could obtain a porcelain mask...

"But," spluttered Gilbert, "you never work with a partner!"

Arthur stepped backward, retreating from the light even as it caught the dull glint of his teeth. "Never say never, dear constable. A good night to you. And mind who you bite."

Only when he undressed for bed that night, after hours of fruitless search and interrogation and furious lecture, did Gilbert find the little card in his pocket. In surprisingly stunted script, with stumbles evocative of his waltz, the gentleman thief had written:

Dear Constable,

I shall have work to attend for a fortnight, but if you reflect my curiosity, do call on me.

I imagine even the finest of thieves might feel lonely at times.
