Because maybe, in another world that she dreams about sometimes, she’s curled up in bed with Rusty right now, her books discarded in favour of the gentle rhythm of an engine lulling her to sleep. A warm, pitted hand is curled around her waist, gentle breath sonorous as Rusty holds her close, and that guilt flows away into contentment as she gets comfortable against his chest. Sometimes, Hydra’s there too, holding her hand across Rusty’s waist as they mutter in their sleep against Rusty’s shoulder, and in those dreams her core couldn’t feel fuller with love-
“Pearl? You alright over there?”
