William nodded. Standing up from his crouch, he stepped back until he was at Ezio’s side, jaw clenched again as he regarded the corpse slumped against the tree—and the head and limbs arranged too neatly on the bloodied ground in front of it. To him ( and clearly, to the other Assassin too ) it was obvious from a glance that someone—not something—had been responsible for the man’s death. A closer look had confirmed the conclusion. Nothing remained of the joints at shoulders and hips but mangles of flesh and gristle—yet as he suspected, the ragged wounds obscured the presence of cleaner cuts. Those same straight lines scored deeply into the exposed bone as well. A blade, heavy, used first to make it easier to twist and tear later. Grotesque as the scene was, it was the butchery of a murderer wrapped in human skin. Not the pelts and scales of a monster.

“And they are always easier to find,” he replied, a quiet disgust in his voice. “Especially if they insist on leaving this sort of mark.” While the pale dead face roused no recognition in William, coming across such a sight a mere half hour’s ride away from Davenport Homestead warranted pursuit, not retreat.
