A Prayer for Protection

For the director of music. A song of David.

1 Lord, rescue me from evil people. Save me from cruel men. 2 They make evil plans. They always start fights. 3 They make their tongues sharp as a snake’s. Their words are like snake poison. Selah

4 Lord, guard me from the power of wicked people. Save me from cruel men who plan to trip me up. 5 Proud men have hidden a trap for me. They have spread out a net beside the road. They have set traps for me. Selah

6 I said to the Lord, “You are my God.” Lord, listen to my prayer for help. 7 Lord God, my mighty savior, you protect me in battle. 8 Lord, do not give the wicked what they want. Don’t let their plans succeed, or they will become proud. Selah

9 Those around me have planned trouble. Now let it come to them. 10 Let burning coals fall on them. Throw them into the fire or into pits from which they cannot escape. 11 Don’t let liars settle in the land. Let evil quickly hunt down cruel men.

12 I know the Lord will get justice for the poor. He will defend the needy in court. 13 Good people will praise his name. I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor

and upholds the cause of the needy.

Psalm 140

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.

1 Deliver me, O LORD, form the evil man: preserve me form the violent man;

2 Which imagine mischiefs in  their  heart; continually are they gathered together  for  war.

3 They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders poison  is  under their lips. Selah.

4 Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.

5 The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me. Selah.

6 I said unto the LORD, “Thou  art  my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O LORD.

7 O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, Thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.

8 Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device;  lest  they exalt themselves. Selah.

9  As for  the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

10 Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again.

11 Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow  him.”

12 I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted,  and  the right of the poor.

13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto Thy Name: the upright shall dwell in Thy presence.

I say to the Lord, “You are my God.”    Hear, Lord, my cry for mercy. Sovereign Lord, my strong deliverer,    you shield my head in the day of battle. Do not grant the wicked their desires, Lord;    do not let their plans succeed.

Rescue Me, O LORD, From Evil Men

1 O Lord, take me away from sinful men. Keep me safe from men who want to hurt others. 2 They make sinful plans in their hearts. They always start wars. 3 They make their tongues sharp like a snake’s. And the poison of a snake is under their lips.

4 O Lord, keep me from the hands of the sinful. Keep me safe from men who want to hurt others and have planned to trip my feet. 5 The proud have hidden a trap for me. With ropes they have spread a net. They have set traps for me beside the road. 6 I said to the Lord, “You are my God. Listen to the voice of my prayers, O Lord. 7 O God the Lord, the strength that saves me, You have covered my head in the day of battle. 8 O Lord, do not give the sinful what they want. Do not let their plans work, or they will be honored.

9 “As for those who gather around me, may the wrong-doing of their lips come upon their heads. 10 May burning coals fall upon them. May they be thrown into the fire, into deep holes, and rise no more. 11 Do not let the man whose talking hurts people stand in the land. May trouble hurry to catch and destroy the man who wants to hurt others.”

12 I know that the Lord will stand by those who suffer and do what is right for the poor. 13 For sure those who are right and good will give thanks to Your name.
