Even after 41 years, this Douglas fir specimen still has a faint pine smell. Opening the conifer cabinets is one of the many perks of working in an herbarium (as opposed to being poked in the cactus cabinets!) . . . The Douglas fir may be common, but it's important to New Mexico as a species sold for its lumber. This species is also the largest native evergreen in both New Mexico and Arizona! . . .
