History of World Stroke Day (WSD)
World Stroke Day was established on October 29th 2004, at the World Stroke Congress in Vancouver, Canada. Later in 2006, the day was proclaimed for public awareness. In 2006, the World Stroke Organisation was created through the merger of the World Stroke Federation and the International Stroke Society. Since then, the World Stroke Organisation (WSO) has been managing and advocating World Stroke Day (WSD) across different platforms.
The idea for World Stroke Day emerged in the 1990s as stroke data worldwide began to accumulate. In 2010, the World Stroke Organisation (WSO) declared stroke a public health emergency to curb the trending mortality and disability due to the lack of awareness and proper accessibility of diagnosis and treatment to everyone. It is estimated that, in 2016, 11 crore 60 lakh potential years of life were lost to death and disability due to stroke (a measure of premature mortality).
