ABOUT
Avery was born to an asshole of a man by the name of Russell Fabray and a not entirely saintly, up and coming country star by the name of Flora Dunn. The affair was the kind of thing kept under wraps, but that didn’t stop the hold he had on Flora. He used his name and power in the industry to keep her quiet. Even after Flora broke it off with him, his power kept her quiet, not wanting to risk retaliation and her own career. It wasn’t until well after his ways were made public that Flora, and in turn Avery, stepped forward to admit the truth.
It was known early on that Avery was a troubled child. The kind of kid who bit other kids, was physically violent at the drop of a hat, and in need of a lot of professional help. Help that her mother got her, as soon as she could. Avery was raised primarily by her grandparents, until she was mentally stable enough to join Flora while touring, at about the age of ten. Growing up on her grandparents ranch in Louisiana meant that Avery found herself happily surrounded by animals, animals that made far more sense to her than people ever did, possibly ever would. Goats were the most relatable for her and were her favorites, but cows were her safe space, often found on bad nights, curled up in the barn with one. Not the safest place for a young girl to be, but it was better knowing she had someplace to go, than if she’d just run off, a worry that persisted even long after her troubles were being dealt with.
When Avery was fifteen, her mother met a man in his early twenties, a good number of years Flora’s junior. His name was Joshua Chamberlin, affectionately called Joss by those who knew him, and despite the age gap and Avery’s dislike of how close in age to herself he was, the pair hit it off. And they hit it off well. So much so that Avery had to admit that he was good for her mother, even if she didn’t want to and didn’t outwardly show it. In fact, she took to calling him her mother’s boy toy. But, the man took things in stride, giving back just as good as he got, and in turn, earning Avery’s approval and affection. She also eventually went to work on his farm, but given he was the boy next door, she also still helped out with her grandparents when she was needed.
Another thing Avery fell in love with while living with her grandparents, was the rodeo. A terrifying venture, but it was something she was endeared towards and eventually found herself taking part in. It was the thing she loved more than life on the farm and those dreams manifested into a career. All through her teens she built up a name for herself and by the time she was able, she was hitting the pro circuit.
Within the last few years, Avery found herself at home in Louisiana more and more, helping Joss on the farm as he struggled with some health issues and her mother was on tour. This, plus her grandparents considering passing on the farm, most likely to Joss, as most of her aunts and uncles had lives and farms of their own, and even those that stayed home were getting older themselves, Avery knew she’d need to be around more. She needed to be able to run things and with times changing and farms and ranches constantly getting bought out and ruined, she knew she needed extra help. A degree in business seemed like the best way to go about it. While she could have easily gone to LSU and stayed close to home, her mother pushed her towards PSU, wanting to give her an experience outside of the south and what she was used to.
Flora has a handful of nicknames for Avery, but her main ones are Sweet Pea and Sassafras, one for when she’s being sweet and another for when she’s running her mouth, and truly being her mother’s daughter. From there, Avery earned the nickname Sassy. Both a trait and a way of life. It’s one she wears proudly, and literally. Thanks to Joss, she owns a number of denim vests and jackets that bear Sassy across the back that she wears with pride. She was born with bright red hair it eventually faded to strawberry blonde hair, that went fully blonde within the last few years. Due to this, Avery tends to dye her hair red, having grown fond of it over the years. Though, every now and again she’ll let it fade fully and grow out, to give her hair a break.
