“Don’t you wish to connect with other people? I wish I could connect with other people.”

“Oh, sometimes loneliness overwhelms me.” Her voice comes softly, as if farther away when it really isn’t. “But there are complications. Abandonment issues. I lost my parents multiple times.”

“Sounds significant.” Mauve smiles when Rachel laughs again.

“Your inability to connect with people is showing,” Rachel teases.

“Then we’re identical.”

“Strange as it seems.”

“A what?” Sarah snorted. Hair fell around her face in a tangle, and she shoved it back, trying to comb it with her fingers.

“A portrait sitting,” Rachel repeated, brushing her own hair in front of the mirror. Not that she had a reflection, but some habits die harder than others. The gold of her hair drew all the candlelight in the room and it glowed like a halo. Sarah squinted at her, easily imagining her as some sort of goddess - the old kind that would accept sacrifices.

Accept? Demand.

Rachel gave her that little smile that said she knew exactly what Sarah was thinking - and was rather pleased with it. The brush was set down on the dresser softly, and she turned to face the bed where Sarah sat half-covered by quilts of deep red brocade. Rachel’s eyes glowed gold for a moment as she took in the sight of the dark mass of hair flowing over bare shoulders - a warmer gold than the pale sheen of her kimono. Embroidered chrysanthemums bloomed alongside butterflies, the silken threads gleaming in the candlelight. They seemed to dance and flutter as Rachel stood. She didn’t bother tying it, and as she glided over the huge Persian rug that covered the bedroom floor, Sarah couldn’t help but stare at the marble skin that flashed in and out of shadow.

The bed dipped as Rachel sat on the edge and leaned over to cup Sarah’s chin in one hand, thumb stroking her jaw.

“I want to capture you just as you are, my darling girl,” she said softly. Her fingers moved down Sarah’s neck, across her collarbone, and came to rest just over her heart. “You don’t know how utterly beautiful you are. How alive.”

Her palm felt like ice against the warmth of Sarah’s skin and she could feel her heartbeat speed up. Rachel felt it too and her eyes fluttered closed, her mouth open just enough to show teeth that seemed to lengthen as Sarah watched.

The sight still enthralled her and she shifted under the heavy bed covers, thighs rubbing together. The scars left on her throat by those teeth throbbed in unison with her pulse, and so did other parts of her body.

Rachel’s eyes opened and her smile grew wider, her teeth shining in the candlelight as she leaned closer, close enough for Sarah to see the pupils widen, black pools in amber. The icy touch slid upwards, around the back of her neck. Her skin shivered as Rachel entangled her fingers in the mess of hair.

When Sarah leant forwards to kiss her, the cold fingers tightened and held her a fraction of an inch away.

She knew how strong Rachel was - and felt her pulse quicken even more at the thought - but pulled against the grip a little anyway, until her scalp stung.

Rachel arched an eyebrow, effortlessly staying out of Sarah’s reach until she groaned in frustration.

“Bloody hell, Rachel,” she sighed. Even though the very idea of sitting still for hours while someone copied her face onto canvas was excruciating, in this moment she would give the Countess anything she asked for. “Look, I’ll think about it, yeah?”

Rachel didn’t relinquish her grip, but placed her cheek against Sarah’s, cool and smooth.

“Good girl,” she murmured into Sarah’s ear.

Sarah felt her lips twitch into a smile and she reached out to slip her hands under the heavy silk. Rachel pulled her in for a kiss, and before long the kimono was lying in a golden heap on the floor.

she’s the softest kitten (although the majestic goblin perched on the couch behind me has my heart and is also perfect)
