DJ Mary whistled a jovial tune as she watered the roots of a brand-new pinap tree. She’d gotten it a week earlier and she was head-over-heels in love with it. Springy leaves and delicious fruit... what could be better? Mary gingerly touched the leaves. This little guy needed a name. She’d ask Ben, but she knew he’d name it something stupid, like Deathlord or Bloodmother. She grimaced. No thank you.
With one last tender look, Mary left her plant and went back to her desk. She adjusted her glasses and floppy summer hat and grabbed her notes. Oh yes, the event! Aside from Valentine’s Day, summer was undoubtedly her favorite season. Sunshine, fresh fruits, and the ocean! Pool days and the inevitable sunburn! Meowzie may not like it, but Mary sure did. She closed her eyes and pictured herself by the beach, relaxing.
What am I doing?! DJ Mary jolted awake, jostling the hat off her head, and leaped out of her chair. “Oh no.” Papers littered the floor. She scrambled to pick them all up, hitting her head under her desk in the process. Her glasses fell to the floor. In her haste, Mary crushed them under her heel. “Oh, nooo!”
Head throbbing, vision fuzzy, DJ Mary sat back at her desk. Looked at the microphone. Pondered where her life was headed. And got ready for another round of phone calls.
