You said the Streets of Rage trilogy (Barring Streets of Rage remake) was too simple. Care to elaborate more?
That’s more a dig at all classic beat’em’ups. I’ve always found games like Final Fight, Streets of Rage, etc. to be incredibly tedious and boring.
The modern incarnation would be something like Bayonetta, where you have tons and tons of combat options. Launchers, dodges, and all variations on punches and kicks. There’s a lot of depth to keep a player interested and engaged.
Meanwhile, in games like The Simpsons, Turtles in Time, Final Fight, etc. you’ll have a single attack button, maybe five total moves, and one combo string and that’s expected to last you the entire game. You go around mashing the same button over, and over, and over, fighting palette swapped versions of the same five enemies forever. There’s very little finesse, almost zero depth, not even any way to dodge or parry, and my brain eventually turns to absolute mush.
A few games here or there tried to spice things up, like Streets of Rage 3′s super meter, but it wasn’t enough.
It actually bums me out, because hearing “Platinum’s making a Ninja Turtles game” I imagine Turtles in Time with Bayonetta’s level of combat complexity. That’s not what we ended up getting.
Streets of Rage Remake is an interesting beast because it meshes all of the games together. All of the gameplay mechanics mush together, you’ve got a branching pathway system, and it really helps stave off at least some of the tedium inherent to that genre – though it’s important to note I’ve never actually finished Streets of Rage Remake, or even necessarily put tons of time in to it. But I do remember liking it for how robust it ended up feeling.

Have you seen Larry Bundy Jr.'s vid on the 4 reasons Shigeru Miyamoto was an asshole?
Guru Larry is a nice person and I’ve enjoyed it when he’s turned up on videos with Ashens, but I don’t usually watch his own stuff because it feels kinda clickbait-y, to be honest. He seems to primarily specialize in video listicles.
Watching his Miyamoto video now, he also massages the truth a little bit, probably so he can fit enough stuff in to his video.
For example, he mentions Rare sold themselves to Microsoft “just to get away from Miyamoto” when that’s definitely not the way I’ve heard it – the way I heard it, Rare had a habit of going over budget on their games and would sell stock in the company to Nintendo for fast cash injections. Eventually they reached a point where they couldn’t sell Nintendo any more stock without Nintendo gaining a controlling stake in the company (51% of shares), so they offered Nintendo the entire company outright. Nintendo refused, but Rare still needed the money to finish Star Fox Adventures. That’s where Microsoft swooped in.
That doesn’t sound like they were desperate to get away from Nintendo at all; quite the opposite, really.
He’s also confused by some of the reasons behind the cancellation of Star Fox 2. Miyamoto said it was to avoid conflicting with the Nintendo 64, which makes Larry suspicious, given Star Fox 2 was slated for 1995, and the Nintendo 64 released in 1996. Larry didn’t do enough research here – the Nintendo 64 was notoriously caught up in extended development troubles, delaying its release multiple times. The original 1994 arcade version of Killer Instinct advertises it was “coming soon to the Ultra 64,” hinting at what was likely supposed to be a 1995 launch.
I think it’s obvious that Miyamoto isn’t a perfect person but I don’t know exactly how much of what Larry says I’d take as the absolute, 100% truth. I think his heart is in the right place, and he starts in an honest place, but…
Do you think they'll port Wii U games to the Switch?
They kind of already are, aren’t they? Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is basically just one of those “Game of the Year Edition”s they put out for some games, and while Splatoon 2 has the 2 on the end to denote a sequel, word from the Switch reveal event is that it still looked and played a lot like the Wii U version (720p, no visual enhancements at all).
I’m sure Super Smash Bros. Deluxe or whatever is on its way – more than a few people have denoted that Amiibo for Cloud, Corrin and Bayonetta have not yet been announced, even though a vow was made to have Amiibo for all Smash characters, even DLC ones. It’s likely Nintendo is holding back talking about Smash Switch until they can make a proper Amiibo push for the system, and who knows, maybe we’ll see Amiibo 2.0 or something with extended functionality.
Similarly, I assume they aren’t talking about Super Mario Maker Switch because they want to give the 3DS version more room to breathe. If they aren’t planning a version of Mario Maker for the Switch, they done goofed up hard.
As for the rest of Nintendo’s games? Nintendo can be such a backwards company, who even knows. I don’t have any plans to get a Switch for myself right now (unless we want one for TSSZ and it falls to me), but it’d be nice to have Switch versions of Tropical Freeze and Bayonetta 1 + 2 at the very least.
But Nintendo is weird and unpredictable. They could very well leave a lot of Wii U games behind.
