Started drawing blobfish and tripped over this soapbox. Who put that there?

I find that a lot of people who make cheeky posts about what living blobfish look like tend to not mention how the typically inedible blobfish is getting pulled up from the deepest depths of the sea in the first place. The new documentary “Ocean” with David Attenborough provides a chilling underwater look at a trawling net in action. You can watch a clip here. today my therapist and i talked about blobfish for like twenty minutes and i nearly cried because why would they do that to that poor fish it’s so mean how the destroyed body of the little guy got voted world’s ugliest fish. i love him forever and he’s so sweet and cute when he’s not all exploded and like just ugh. everyone stop what you’re doing and look up blobfish in natural habitat right now because he deserves some respect

Alive sculpins!!! Woooo yeah I sure do love me some alive sculpins!!!

I don't understand why people only like the dead ones. The alive ones are just as blobby and ugly (affectionate) with a side of bumpy poisonous skin spikes and the extra benefit of being an alive fish! What a lovely critter.

Some info i found by googling a lot of stuff about Pyschrolutidae (Blobfish)

The Viral "blobfish" photo is of a "Psychrolutes microporos", although many think it's the "Pyschrolutes marcidus", which is closely related

However the common image of "what they actually look like" is neither

This is a "Psychrolutes phrictus" which have "cirri" or these fleshy spikes everywhere over them, which neither the microporos nor marcidus have. Here's some images of Psychrolutidae without it:

also they have actual names!! any psychrolutidae can be called Flathead/Tadpole Sculpins, or Toadfish. The marcidus is also called an Australian Sculpin, and the microporos doesnt have it's own name :(

the noble creatures that are referred to as "bl*bfish" are only refered to as such because they take on melted forms once they are taken out of their habitat. in their natual environment, they are completely normal fish. they only become "blobs" once their tissues explode from depressurization, as the natural pressure of the deep ocean is what stabilizes their bodies.

for those of you who disregard the health of psychrolutes and carelessly refer to psychrolutes as "blobfish", your time on this earthly realm is limited.
