Physical Therapy Volunteering Part X 8.12.13
8/12/13: Today I got in at 1:45pm, the rehab center was pretty empty because there were no appointments until 2pm. As I waited around, I got asked to assist another physical therapist in helping an older guy walk with the help of a handicap walker. He was pretty old and disabled and could barely walk more than 10 yards before needing a rest. He was sort of rude to his therapist but nevertheless she did not argue back and I still helped. Soon after, I met with Dr. Irina and observed her 2:15pm patient with CP. This patient was about 8 years old and had his twin sister accompany him. Hemiparesis, so he had trouble on one side of his body, the right. Exercises included balancing on one knee, using a bosu ball to balance on one foot, jumping over a jump rope knee height and jumping on a flat surface. He has leg braces and was pretty cooperative. The was his condition was, it's incredible on how happy he was despite his struggles in walking properly. The next patient was a little guy I previously worked with, "Patient Col." As previously mentioned, he had some gait dysfunction so his first exercise was the treadmill for 3 minutes with various speeds up to 3.0mph. He was doing pretty well. Then we went to the fitness studio for him to practice throwing a weighted ball overhead to the other side of the room. Dr. Irina would then make him room and grab one ball and put it back in the proper bin. It was noticed that his feet landed too hard each time he ran. His other exercises included abdominal work, using the heavy rope and putting the weighted balls in a bin in prone position. It was a pretty quick day as I left after 2.5 hours. >>> It's kind of getting repetitive to me as I observe and shadow the physical therapists. I think I'll take a break and when I resume, I'll follow a variety of other therapists. Some good ones to shadow would be Dr. Forrest, who is great at explaining things involving therapy and putting kinesiology into it. He is also good at making his patient work hard with his motivation. Its important to know that patient participation is essential for their progress. Another one would be Dr. Marcelo who's an older therapist but knows a lot and is almost like a professor whenever I observed him work. Other options would be observing occupational therapists, this is favorable because most OT patients are kids ! 😊🏥📝.
