Untitled (Double Archive With Rotation). 2013. Used envelopes & printed paper.
Untitled (Correspondings). 2014. Used envelope liners, xerographic & ink jet prints on paper.
Stephen Sollins' quilt-like collages of used printed envelope liners and patterned paper are a novel reuse of those ever-accumulating financial and billing envelopes we inevitably receive. The artist bases his compositions on extant nineteenth century American quilts through visual approximation of the original, as seen in Double Archive with Rotation, or digital processing and random number generating, seen above in Correspondings. We applaud Sollins' painstaking and ingenious craft evident in these collages, appropriately touching on themes of interpersonal connectivity and domesticity.
