the Headless Hunter

Wandering aimless, blind through a forest or thicket. Thorns tearing at the flesh, blood commingled with sweat. Darkness. Going blind, or dreaming you have been blinded as if in some Greek tragedy, you stumble onwards. You reach the threshold - there is no going back.
Around you, the danger is clear - heavy, palpable, wet. Everything is closer, approaching, obscenely detailed, baroque, fragmented, razor sharp. A vista reveals itself, surprising you as it springs from the darkness. Suddenly standing on a precipice, you could fall at any moment.
Before your eyes is a tableau of infinite, unreachable depth; an architecture of inconsolable distance. Unknowable, unreachable... the vista appears unclear, out of focus, poorly lit under a moon shrouded in thin clouds.
How does one cross this isolated frontier? Is there every any return from this act?
