I'm reading a published science-fiction story. By the time I got to page 25 the main characters (men) had already whipped out their overly big and explosive guns multiple times, gambled and won billions of dollars to the adulation of a casino crowd, and had TWO steaks.
Then I continue reading where they go to an severely inhospitable planet where only the tough survive. (It's like an extreme sci-fi version of Australia.) As a result mortality is high, so NO OLD WOMEN EXIST. Only very young women are there who would never have gray hair or wrinkles, which was explicitly pointed out to the reader.
The main character finally meets a woman from that planet, although he always describes her as a girl. She's described as having "the figure of a goddess, tanned skin and a perfectly formed face." He thinks she's very young, maybe 21. He then asks her how old she is. She's 19.
Fanfiction is refreshing to me because so much of it is written by women and I can read an imaginative sci-fi or fantasy story without stuff like this in it.
